SIOUX CITY, Iowa - Dakota State and Briar Cliff split their baseball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Bishop Mueller Field. The Chargers broke a 3-3 tie with two runs scored in the bottom sixth frame to gain a 5-3 game one victory. The Trojans rallied back from 6-5 deficit as they scored two runs in the final inning and held on to defeat BC 7-6 to gain a split.
Dakota State is 22-23 overall record and 9-3 against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. Briar Cliff dropped to 19-22 after the loss in the second game.
Game 1 - Briar Cliff 5, Dakota State 3
The Chargers scored first in the bottom of the first inning caused by DSU's defensive error for a 1-0 lead.
DSU answered back with three runs in the top of the third inning to overtake the lead from Briar Cliff. With bases loaded and one out situation, Kyle Braun hit an RBI single to score Ryan Steffensen to tie the game at 1-1. Chaz Palmer added an RBI fiedler's choice to score Ryan Bourcier. The Trojans added a run from Corey Pasichnyk caused by BC's defensive miscue to give DSU a 3-1 lead.
Gary Davis hit an RBI single and Dylan Romo added an RBI double as the Chargers tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom fourth frame.
The Chargers scored twice in the bottom sixth inning to earn a 5-3 lead.
DSU was unable to score in the final inning as the Chargers secured the victory.
Jason Hershfield had two singles for the Trojans. Rays Roman, Steffensen, Bourcier, Max Garza and Braun each added a single.
David Kowal, Shane Richins and Dylan Romo each had a double and a single for Briar Cliff. Brendon Opsahl, Chase Gunderson, Brad Winkelman, Davis and Zach Watts each added a single.
BC left nine runners on base. DSU had two runners left on base.
Seth Doxey started on the mound for the Trojans. He pitched 3 1/3 innings and allowed three runs (one unearned) on seven hits. Kyle Bradbury (0-4) recorded the loss in relief. He worked 1 2/3 innings and gave up two runs on three hits. JD Farley worked in the sixth inning and gave up a hit.
Eli Nickell worked the first three innings for the Chargers. He allowed three runs (one unearned) on five hits. Trevor Gipson (2-0) recorded the victory as he pitched three innings with one hit allowed. Beau Brown tossed the final inning for his 12th save of the season.
Game 2 - Dakota State 7, Briar Cliff 6
Hershfield hit a two-out RBI double to score Anyelo Roman to give DSU a 1-0 lead in the opening inning.
Ryan Bourcier hit a solo home run (his seventh home run of the season) to open the top second frame to extend Trojans' lead to 2-0.
In the bottom of the second inning, Kowal hit a solo home run as BC trimmed their deficit to 2-1.
DSU's Anyelo Roman recorded a double with one out in the top of the third inning. Steffensen hit an RBI single to score Anyelo Roman as DSU earned a 3-1 lead.
Rays Roman hit a two-out triple to score Braun and Kyle Holland in the top fourth frame as the Trojans gained a 5-1 lead.
The Chargers exploded for five runs in the bottom fourth inning to overtake the lead from DSU at 6-5.
Dakota State mounted a rally in the final inning. Anyelo Roman hit a solo home run (extended DSU school record book for most home runs in a single season with 14) to tie the game at 6-6. Steffensen reached on base by a walk with one out and advanced to second base by BC's wild pitch. He advanced to third base caused by Chargers' balk. Bourcier hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Steffensen as the Trojans regained their lead back at 7-6.
DSU sealed the victory in the bottom of the seventh inning as BC left one runner on base.
Anyelo Roman had a home run and a double with three runs scored for the Trojans. Rays Roman added a triple and two RBIs. Hershfield had a double and an RBI. Steffensen, Bourcier and Braun each had a hit.
Kowal had a home run and a single with two runs scored for BC. Shane Richins and Ryan Etter each had two singles. Opsahl, Romo and Watts each had a hit.
Both teams left six runners on base.
Josh Caven started the game for DSU. He pitched 3 2/3 innings and allowed six runs on six hits. Drew Sweeter (2-1) recorded the win as he worked 2 1/3 innings in relief. He limited the Chargers to two hits. Hershfield worked the seventh inning for his seventh save of the season. He gave up one hit.
Taylor Owen tossed five innings for the Chargers. He gave up five runs on six hits. Owen recorded five strikeouts. Gearld Baker worked a shutout sixth inning in relief. Brown (0-1) took the loss as the tossed the seventh inning. He gave up two runs on one hit.
Dakota State will take a week off before returning back to action on Wednesday, April 18. The Trojans continue their 12-game stretch on the road as they face their in-state rival University of Sioux Falls in a doubleheader. First game is set for 5 p.m. at the Harmodon Park.
