THIS WEEK: Dakota State (21-22 overall record) looks to extend their winning streak on Wednesday afternoon as they travel to Sioux City, Iowa. The Trojans visit Briar Cliff (17-21), a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, in a doubleheader at Bishop Muller Field. First game is slated to start at 2 p.m., followed by the second game in approximately 20-25 minutes after the completion of the first game.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State and Briar Cliff split a pair of games in their last meeting on April 6, 2011 at Flynn Field in Madison, S.D. The Trojans had to rally back from deficit two times to defeat the Chargers in the first game 6-4. Briar Cliff scored the first four runs of the game in the first three innings and held on to defeat the Trojans 4-1 to earn a doubleheader split.
ABOUT BRIAR CLIFF: Briar Cliff is currently on a five-game losing streak with the most recent doubleheader sweep from York (Neb.) on April 5 in Sioux City, Iowa. The Chargers suffered a pair of losses against the Panthers 16-2 and 10-0. BC, under the guidance of 15th year head coach Boyd Pitkin, is 17-21 overall record and 3-5 in the GPAC play. The Chargers are 6-6 at home, 8-15 on the road and 3-0 on neutral sites.
TROJANS 12-GAME STRETCH ON ROAD: Dakota State is currently in the middle of their 12-game stretch on the road, recording three wins and three losses after Monday's doubleheader sweep over in-state rival Mount Marty. The Trojans will continue their stretch at Briar Cliff on Wednesday, at University of Sioux Falls on April 18 and at Dakota Wesleyan on April 19. Dakota State is 14-17 record on the road this season.
DSU SCHOOL RECORD BROKEN: Jason Hershfield and Anyelo Roman are currently tied for first in the DSU school record book for most home runs in a single season. Both Hershfield and Roman each recorded their 13th home run of the season in a doubleheader sweep over Mount Marty on April 9 at the Riverside Field.
DSU SWEEPS LANCERS: Dakota State overcame six errors in the first game, but the Trojans hit four home runs combined by Brandon Womack's complete game helped DSU defeat Mount Marty 8-2 on April 9. Jason Hershfield recorded a season-high 13 strikeouts in the second game and hit a three-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to help propel DSU complete their season series sweep over the Lancers.
TROJANS VERSUS IN-STATE TEAMS: Dakota State remains undefeated (6-0) against in-state teams after the doubleheader sweep over Mount Marty on April 9. The Trojans will play two more in-state teams next week, at University of Sioux Falls on April 18 and at Dakota Wesleyan on April 19.
FOR THE RECORDS: The Trojans are currently 8-2 against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference after the doubleheader sweep over Mount Marty on April 9. DSU split a four-game series with Hastings on March 17-18 in Hastings, Neb. Dakota State swept both in-state rivals at Flynn Fieldâ€”versus Dakota Wesleyan on March 21 and Mount Marty on April 3.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Tuesday, April 10, Dakota State ranks ninth in the nation in home runs per game (1.0) and 46th in total stolen bases (70). Jason Hershfield and Anyelo Roman ranks fifth in the nation in home runs with 13. Anyelo Roman ranks 13th in slugging percentage (.739), 22nd in total bases per game (2.4) and 44th in total runs batted in (40). Hershfield ranks 15th in the nation in batters struck out per nine innings (11.2), 16th in saves (6) and 31st in total batters struck out (62). Seth Doxey is 40th in the nation in earned runs average (2.01). Ryan Bourcier ranks 50th in total putouts (252).
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Anyelo Roman leads Dakota State in batting averageâ€”0.366 with 52 hits. Anyelo Roman records 40 RBIs (0.9) with 12 doubles and 13 home runs. Rays Roman swipes 18 bases for the Trojans this season (0.4 stolen bases per game). Seth Doxey leads the team in earned run average with 2.01 with 12 earned runs in 53 2/3 innings. Hershfield averages 11.2 strikeouts per nine innings (62 total strikeouts). He leads the team with six saves. Chaz Palmer records two triples this year for DSU.
A.I.I. BASEBALL INDEPENDENT TOURNAMENT: The A.I.I. Baseball Independent Tournament will be hosted by Cal State-San Marcos on May 2-5. Besides host-team Cal State-San Marcos, five other teams will qualify to the independent tournament. The winner and runner-up of the independent tournament each will receive an automatic bid to the national tournament. Cal State-San Marcos is the defending A.I.I. Baseball champions where they defeated Houston-Victoria (Texas) 10-3 in the championship game. The NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Tournament is held on May 10-14 on nine different campus sites (selected by the NAIA). The Avista-NAIA World Series will be held in Lewiston, Idaho on May 25 to June 1.
