GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK:  Dakota State (19-22 overall record) continues their busy April schedule Monday evening.  DSU is currently on a 12-game stretch on the road.  The Trojans will face Mount Marty (14-18) in a doubleheader for the second time within a week.  First game of the doubleheader is set for 5 p.m. at the Riverside Park in Yankton, S.D.

LAST MEETING:  Dakota State concluded their 12-game home stand on April 3 with a sweep over Mount Marty at Flynn Field.  The Trojans broke a 1-1 tie by Chaz Palmer's 2-RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn a 3-1 victory in the first game.  DSU scored seven runs in the first inning of the second game to cruise for an 11-2 win.  Kyle Holland (4-for-4 with two doubles and four RBIs) and Max Garza (3-for-3 with two RBIs) were perfect at the plate.

ABOUT MOUNT MARTY:  Mount Marty is a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC).  The Lancers are currently 14-18 overall record and 3-5 in the GPAC.  The Lancers split their last two GPAC doubleheaders.  MMC split with Northwestern (Iowa) on April 5 by the scores of 2-0 (first game) and 1-5 (second game).  The Lancers also split with Dordt (Iowa) 2-7 (first game) and 10-0 (second game) on April 7.  Andy Bernatow is in his eighth season as Mount Marty's head baseball coach.  The Lancers are 4-4 at home and 10-14 on the road this season. 

BUSY WEEK FOR THE TROJANS:  Dakota State plays a total of eight games in five days, starting on April 6.  The Trojans split a doubleheader with Bellevue (Neb.), receiving votes to the latest NAIA Baseball National Poll, on April 6 with the Bruins winning the first game 5-1 and DSU winning the second game by the score of 5-4.  Bellevue swept the Trojans on April 7 by the scores of 16-7 and 10-1.  DSU will face Briar Cliff (Iowa) on Wednesday, April 11 in Sioux City, Iowa.

DSU SCHOOL RECORD BROKEN:  Jason Hershfield extended the DSU school record for most home runs in a single season.  He hit his 12th home run of the season on Saturday in Omaha, Neb.  Anyelo Roman hit his 10th home run of the season on Saturday, which tied him for the second most home runs in a single season in DSU baseball school record book.

TROJANS VERSUS IN-STATE TEAMS:  Dakota State is currently 4-0 against teams from the state of South Dakota.  The Trojans swept Dakota Wesleyan on March 21 (6-5 and 6-3) and Mount Marty on April 3 (3-1 and 11-2).  DSU will face Mount Marty, University of Sioux Falls and Dakota Wesleyan for the remaining schedule against teams from South Dakota.

FOR THE RECORDS:  The Trojans are currently 6-2 against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference.  DSU split a four-game series with Hastings on March 17-18 in Hastings, Neb.  Dakota State swept both in-state rivals at Flynn Field—versus Dakota Wesleyan on March 21 and Mount Marty on April 3.  Mount Marty are winless in four games versus former Dakota Athletic Conference foes.  The Lancers dropped a home doubleheader with Mayville State on March 21 and a road doubleheader at Dakota State on April 3.

NATIONAL RANKINGS:  According to DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Monday, April 9, Dakota State ranks 16th in the nation in home runs per game (0.9) and 50th in total stolen bases (50).  Jason Hershfield ranks 7th in the nation in home runs with 12, 15th in total saves with six (6) and 30th in batters struck out per nine innings (10.3).  Anyelo Roman is 15th in the nation in total home runs (10) and 50th in slugging percentage (.659).  Seth Doxey ranks 40th in the nation in earns runs average (ERA) with 2.01.  Rays Roman is 49th in the nation in total stolen bases with 18.

DSU QUICK LEADERS:  Anyelo Roman leads Dakota State in batting average—0.348 with 47 hits.  Anyelo Roman records 37 RBIs (0.9) with 10 doubles and 10 home runs.  Rays Roman swipes 18 bases for the Trojans this season (0.5 stolen bases per game).  Seth Doxey leads the team in earned run average with 2.01 with 12 earned runs in 53 2/3 innings.  Hershfield averages 10.3 strikeouts per nine innings (49 total strikeouts).  He leads the team with six saves.  Chaz Palmer records two triples this year for DSU.

A.I.I. BASEBALL INDEPENDENT TOURNAMENT:  The A.I.I. Baseball Independent Tournament will be hosted by Cal State-San Marcos on May 2-5.  Besides host-team Cal State-San Marcos, five other teams will qualify to the independent tournament.  The winner and runner-up of the independent tournament each will receive an automatic bid to the national tournament.  Cal State-San Marcos is the defending A.I.I. Baseball champions where they defeated Houston-Victoria (Texas) 10-3 in the championship game.  The NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Tournament is held on May 10-14 on nine different campus sites (selected by the NAIA).  The Avista-NAIA World Series will be held in Lewiston, Idaho on May 25 to June 1.
