THIS WEEK: Dakota State (6-13 overall record, 0-3 Association of Independent Institutions conference record) continues their busy week with three games scheduled. The Lady T's are slated to face two ranked teams from the A.I.I. this week, starting with No. 20 Mayville State (N.D.) (17-2, 5-1 A.I.I.) on Monday night (tonight). The game is slated for 7 p.m. at the Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, N.D. The Lady T's play in-state rival Mount Marty (15-8) on Wednesday night at the Cimpl Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.in Yankton, S.D. On Saturday afternoon, DSU welcomes No. 14 Jamestown (N.D.) (19-4, 3-2 A.I.I.) in an A.I.I. conference game at DSU Fieldhouse. The game is scheduled to start at 4 p.m.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State and Mayville State split their two meetings last season with each team winning on its own floor. The Comets won the first meeting on Nov. 5, 2011 in Mayville, N.D. by the score of 87-62. The Lady T's beat Mayville State on Dec. 3, 2011 in an overtime thriller. DSU outscored the Comets 11-4 in overtime to earn a 67-60 victory at DSU Fieldhouse. Dakota State built the game's largest lead at 17-5 in the last meeting with Mount Marty on Dec. 5 at DSU Fieldhouse. Trailing 37-28 at halftime, the Lancers mounted a second-half comeback and defeated the Lady T's by the score of 66-60. The victory gave Mount Marty their ninth straight win in the series meeting with DSU. The last time the Lady T's defeated the Lancers was on Dec. 30, 2004 at the DSU Fieldhouse (68-62). Jamestown recorded their ninth straight win in the series with the Lady T's on Jan. 19 in the Dakota Tip-off Classic in Jamestown, N.D. The Jimmies defeated DSU by the score of 97-72.
JUNIOR VARSITY GAMES: Dakota State Lady T's junior varsity teams are slated to play two games this week. The Lady T's conclude their four-game home stand on Tuesday night at DSU Fieldhouse. DSU welcomes Northwestern (Iowa) with a tip-off scheduled for 7 p.m. On Wednesday, the Lady T's travel to the Cimpl Arena to take on in-state rival Mount Marty. Tip-off is slated for 4:45 p.m. in Yankton, S.D. The last junior varsity game is scheduled for Feb. 10 at Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in Mitchell.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State splits a pair of game at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Lady T's dropped a 57-54 A.I.I. contest to No. 25 Valley City State (N.D.) on Jan. 24. The Lady T's fell behind by as many as 15 points in the game. DSU mounted a late rally but fell short in the closing minutes of the game. Dakota State bounced back in the winning column, snapping their four-game losing streak with a 93-33 rout over Trinity Bible (N.D.) on Jan. 26. Mayville State recorded a 92-79 road victory over No. 14 Jamestown (N.D.) on Jan. 24. Mount Marty won a pair of road conference games last week. The Lancers upset No. 24 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 73-69 at the Corn Palace on Jan. 23. MMC defeated Nebraska Wesleyan 79-54 on Jan. 26. After dropping a 92-79 home contest to Mayville State, Jamestown bounced back in the winning column with a 102-18 home rout over Oglala Lakota (S.D.) on Jan. 27.
BLOCKS WATCH: Alyson Drooger recorded eight blocks in Lady T's 57-54 loss to nationally-ranked Valley City State (N.D.) on Jan. 24. She had accumulated a total of 72 blocks this season, which is the second most blocked shots in a single season in the Lady T's basketball record book (Maria Gengler currently holds the school record of 102 blocked shots in a single season). According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website, Drooger is ranked second in the nation in blocks per game (3.8) and total blocks with 72. Dakota State is fifth in the nation in blocks per game (5.2) and 10th in total blocks with 98.
INDEPENDENT SPEAKING: Dakota State is currently seventh in the latest Independent weekly ranking as of Monday, Jan. 21. Jamestown (N.D.) (18-3 overall record) had took over the top spot in the independent ranking after capturing the Dakota Tip-off Classic championship on Jan. 20. Mayville State (N.D.) (16-2) had moved to second spot in the ranking. Valley City State (17-4) had dropped from No. 1 to No. 3 in the ranking. Ashford (Iowa) (10-13) sits at No. 4, followed by Johnson & Wales (Colo.) (9-15) at No. 5 and No. 6 Rochester (Mich.) (8-9). La Sierra (Calif.) (10-12) is No. 8 in the ranking. The A.I.I. Division II Women's Basketball Conference Postseason Tournament will be held in Jamestown, N.D. on Feb. 22 through Feb. 24.
LADY T'S QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Lady T's offensive attack with an average of 16.1 points per game (40th in the nation) and shoots 43.3 percent from the field. She ranks 42nd in the nation in 3-piont field goal made per game (2.1). Alyson Drooger records 118 rebounds for an average of 6.2 rebounds per game. She leads the team in blocked shots with 72 (3.8 blocks per game). Yui Onodera dishes out 71 assists this season and averages 3.6 assists per game (50th in the nation). She ranks 38th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio of 1.7. Julie Munson records 27 steals (1.4 steals per game).
