JAMESTOWN, N.D. - Dakota State trailed 33-30 at halftime Sunday afternoon against nationally-ranked Valley City State (N.D.) in the Dakota Tip-off Classic's consolation game at the Civic Center. The Vikings outscored the Lady T's 38-22 in the second-half to defeat the Lady T's 71-52.
Dakota State dipped their overall record to 5-12 and 0-2 Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference record. Valley City State, No. 13 in the latest NAIA Division II Women's Basketball national poll, lifted their overall record to 17-4 and 5-2 in the A.I.I.
The Lady T's and Vikings went through two ties and seven different lead changes in the first six minutes and seven seconds of the game. VCSU earned a three-point halftime advantage.
Valley City State shot 43.8 percent from the field (14-for-32) in the first-half compared to DSU 36.7 percent (11-for-30). The Lady T's were perfect 6-for-6 at the free-throw line, while VCSU was 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
The Vikings kicked off the second-half with a 19-7 run to extend their lead to 52-37 with 12:19 left in the game. From there, VCSU maintained their double-digit lead for the rest of the game.
DSU could get no closer than 11 points on two occasions (52-41 with 11 minutes remaining and 55-44 with 9:56 left).
Kylie Westover scored a game-high 20 points for the Lady T's. She pulled down six rebounds. Alyson Drooger and Brittany Rosberg each added eight points. Rosberg had five rebounds.
Drooger recorded four blocked shots in the game for Dakota State. Haley Stover dished out three assists.
Brittany Lehner led Valley City State with 17 points and recorded four steals. Courtney Titus added 14 points. Katelyn Ralston scored 11 points.
Lehner and Ralston each had six rebounds for the Vikings. Sadiqah Jihad produced six assists.
VCSU shot 40.3 percent overall from the field (27-for-67) compared to DSU 35.4 percent (17-for-48). The Vikings were 7-for-22 from the 3-point range (31.8 percent), while the Lady T's shot 3-for-13 from the 3-point line (23.1 percent).
DSU went to the free-throw line 20 times, making 15 free-throws (75 percent). Valley City State was 10-for-14 from the free-throw line (71.4 percent).
VCSU outrebouned the Lady T's 41-34.
The Vikings outscored DSU 30-10 in points off turnovers.
Both teams will meet again four days later at the DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. in an A.I.I. conference game.
