THIS WEEK: Dakota State (5-9 overall record, 0-0 Association of Independent Institutions conference record) continues their women's basketball games on the road with three games scheduled this week. The Lady T's travel to the Corn Palace on Wednesday evening to visit their long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (14-6). Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. in Mitchell, S.D. Dakota State competes in the Dakota Tip-off Classic on Saturday and Sunday at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D. The Lady T's take on the host-team and nationally-ranked Jamestown (N.D.) (16-3, 1-1 A.I.I.) on Saturday with a 5 p.m. starting time.
LAST MEETING: Dakota Wesleyan had won the last four meetings with the Lady T's in the series meeting history, with the most recently victory on Nov. 13, 2012 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Tigers raced to a 41-19 halftime lead and maintained control for the rest of the game to earn an 82-59 victory. The last time DSU defeated DWU was on Nov. 2, 2010 at the DSU Fieldhouse by the score of 78-73. Jamestown had won the last eight meetings with Dakota State in the series, including a season series sweep last season. The Jimmies won by the score of 66-43 at the Civic Center in Jamestown, N.D. on Jan. 3, 2012 and 71-59 at the DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D. on Jan. 14, 2012. The last time DSU beat Jamestown at the Civic Center was on Feb. 1, 2008, the year when coach Dittman won their third straight Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) conference regular-season title and advanced to NAIA national tournament 'Sweet Sixteen' round.
TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT: Four former Dakota Athletic Conference members will meet in Jamestown, N.D. on Jan. 19 and 20 for a 'Tip-Off Tournament', hosted by Jamestown College (N.D.). The Lady T's will play Jamestown on Jan. 19 in the semifinals at 5 p.m. The other semifinal match-up features Mayville State (N.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.) at 1 p.m. The semifinals winners will play in the championship game on Jan. 20 at 5 p.m., while the semifinals losers will play in a third-place game at 1 p.m. All games will be held at the Civic Center.
250TH VICTORY: Dakota State defeated Oglala Lakota (S.D.) 76-28 on Jan. 13 to give Jeff Dittman his 250th career victory as Dakota State Lady T's basketball head coach. Before entering the 2012-13 season, Dittman produced an overall record of 245-201 at DSUâ€”the most wins by a women's basketball head coach at DSU. In addition, he is 336-243 career collegiate coaching record before entering 2012-13 season (91-42 record at Hastings, Neb.). Dittman ranks 12th in the NAIA Division II women's basketball coaching winningest active coaches with 336 wins (before entering 2012-13 season).
LADY T'S CONTINUE HOT SHOOTING: Dakota State had shot better than 40 percent from the field in all 14 games this season, except one game (30.6 percent versus Northwestern, Iowa). The Lady T's shot a season high 58.9 percent from the field in 76-28 road victory at Oglala Lakota (S.D.) on Jan. 13. According to the DakStats statistical website as of Tuesday, Dakota State is ranked third in the nation in field goal percentage (47.1 percent). The Lady T's is eighth in free-throw percentage (73.6 percent) and 26th in 3-point field goal percentage (32.9 percent). DSU averages 72.1 points per game, which is 30th best in the nation.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State trailed by 25 points with 8:46 remaining (76-51) on Jan. 9 versus Dordt (Iowa), but the Lady T's mounted a furious late rally and fell short by two points (81-79). The Lady T's dropped a 93-69 exhibition game loss to former Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) foe South Dakota Mines on Jan. 12 in Rapid City. DSU snapped their three-game regular-season losing streak with a 76-28 victory over Oglala Lakota in Kyle, S.D. on Jan. 13. After entering the 'Top 25' national poll for the first time this season last week, Dakota Wesleyan dropped two straight games on the road. The Tigers suffered a 69-66 defeat to Northwestern (Iowa) on Jan. 9 and 63-60 loss to Hastings (Neb.) on Jan. 13. Jamestown bounced back in the winning column last weekend after losing to Johnson & Wales (Colo.) on Jan. 5. The Jimmies earned a pair of road victories at South Dakota Mines 77-68 on Jan. 11 and at Oglala Lakota 118-36 on Jan. 12.
WESTOVER RANKS IN 3-POINTERS: Kylie Westover ranks 25th in the nation in 3-point field goals made per game with an average of 2.4. She is 41st in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage (37.9) and 47th in field goal percentage (45.5 percent). Westover averages 15.9 points per game, which ranks her 44th in the nation.
LADY T'S QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Lady T's offense attack with 15.9 points per game. Alyson Drooger averages 6.0 rebounds and 3.7 blocks per game. She ranks second in the nation in blocks per game and third in total blocks (56). Yui Onodera records 54 assists through 14 games this season. She is 49th in the nation in assists per game (3.6). Julie Munson accumulates 21 steals, averaging 1.5 steals per game. Haley Stover is 21st in the nation in assist/turnover ratio of 2.0. Dakota State is fourth in the nation in blocks per game (5.1), 5th in assists per game (18.5) and 26th in 3-point field goal percentage (32.9 percent).
