THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University women's basketball team (4-8 overall record) continues their busy January schedule with three games this week. The Lady T's host Dordt (Iowa) (10-9) on Wednesday night at DSU Fieldhouse. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. DSU travels west for a pair of games this weekend. On Friday night, the Lady T's visit Oglala Lakota (S.D.) at the Multipurpose Gym in Kyle, S.D. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. (Central Time)/5 p.m. (Mountain Time). On Saturday, Dakota State plays an exhibition game with former Dakota Athletic Conference rival South Dakota Mines (9-6). Tip-off is scheduled for 4 p.m. (CT)/3 p.m. (MT) at the King Center.
LAST MEETING: Dordt won the last four meetings with the Lady T's, including a 68-52 victory in Sioux Center, Iowa last season. The last time Dakota State defeated the Defenders was on Nov. 15, 2007 on Dordt's gym floor by the score of 63-47. DSU's last home victory against Dordt (Iowa) was on Nov. 10, 2006 as the Lady T's stormed past the Defenders 86-49. The Lady T's had twelve different players scored in a 112-39 rout over Oglala Lakota (S.D.) in both teams' first-ever meeting on Nov. 1, 2012 at DSU Fieldhouse. South Dakota Mines swept a pair of games with Dakota State last seasonâ€”73-62 on Jan. 21, 2012 at DSU Fieldhouse and 77-64 on Feb. 18, 2012 in Rapid City, S.D. The last time Lady T's beat the Hardrockers was on Jan. 14, 2011 by the score of 66-59 at DSU Fieldhouse.
DROOGER BLOCKS RECORDS & RANKS: Alyson Drooger moves up to seventh for most blocks in a single season. She had recorded 47 blocked shots through 12 regular-season games. Drooger broke the DSU school record for most blocked shots in a single game with 11 in a game versus Mount Marty on Dec. 5, 2012 at DSU Fieldhouse. On Jan. 5 versus Midland (Neb., she recorded six blocks, which is tied for fifth most blocked shots in a single game. According to DakStats-NAIA statistical website, Drooger leads the A.I.I. Conference in blocks. She ranks second in the nation in blocks per game (3.9) and third in total blocks (47).
ONE WIN SHY FOR 250TH WIN: Head coach Jeff Dittman is one win shy of recording his 250th victory as DSU Lady T's head coach. He is in his 16th year as the Lady T's basketball head coach and 20th overall as collegiate head coach (4 years at Hastings). Dittman is currently 249-209 overall record at Dakota State, the most wins by a women's basketball head coach at DSU.
HOT SHOOTING: Dakota State is shooting 46.1 percent from the field through 12 games, which is fifth best in the nation. The Lady T's are 10th in the nation in free-throw percentage (73.4 percent). DSU is 34th in the nation in scoring offense with an average of 71.3 points per game. The Lady T's averages 5.5 3-point field goals made per game (43rd in the nation). Dakota State records 30.4 percent from the 3-point line (48th in the nation). The Lady T's have nine players that are shooting above 40 percent (Kylie Westover, Katy Pillar, Alyson Drooger, Courtney Hulstein, Cassie Jacobsen, Courtney Hamblin, Yui Onodera and Jayda Swenson).
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State fell behind at halftime by the score of 38-18 with Great Plains Athletic Conference foe Midland (Neb.) at DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 5. The Lady T's shot 61.3 percent in the second-half but was unable to make a comeback as the Warriors hang on to a 80-68 victory. Dordt went 1-1 for the week last week. The Defenders lost a 73-65 road contest at Hastings (Neb.) on Jan. 2. Dordt returned home on Jan. 5 and handed the top-ranked Concordia (Neb.) their first loss by the score of 96-86 in double overtime. The Defenders outscored the Bulldogs 16-6 in second overtime. DC was 32-for-37 at the free-throw line while CU was 18-for-25. Oglala Lakota is scheduled to play Lake Region Monday night (tonight) in Devil Lakes, N.D. South Dakota Mines suffered an exhibition game loss to NCAA Division I University of Wyoming 87-38 on Jan. 3 and a regular-season defeat to NCAA Division I Colorado State 97-53 on Jan. 4. The Hardrockers return home Monday night (tonight) to host former DAC foe Valley City State (N.D.) in Rapid City, S.D.
LADY T'S QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads Lady T's in scoring with 13.3 points per game. She shoots 43.4 percent from the field. Alyson Drooger averages 10.3 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. She leads the team with an average of 3.7 blocks per game. Yui Onodera accumulates 45 assists this season. She ranks 47th in the nation in assists per game (3.7). Julie Munson records 15 steals (1.4 steals per game). Haley Stover ranks 11th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio of 2.3.
TIP-OFF TOURNAMENT: Four former Dakota Athletic Conference members will meet in Jamestown, N.D. on Jan. 19 and 20 for a 'Tip-Off Tournament', hosted by Jamestown, N.D. The Lady T's will play Jamestown on Jan. 19 in the semifinals at 5 p.m. The other semifinal match-up features Mayville State (N.D.) and Valley City State (N.D.) at 1 p.m. The semifinals winners will play on Jan. 20 at 5 p.m., while the semifinals losers will play in a third-place game at 1 p.m. All games will be held at the Civic Center.
