MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University baseball team fell short in the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) doubleheader with Mayville State (N.D.) Saturday afternoon at Flynn Field. The Comets won the pitcher's duel in the first game 2-1. DSU had a 5-1 lead in the second game, but were outscored by Mayville State 11-1 in the final four inning as the Comets earned a 12-6 game two victory.
Dakota State lost their fourth straight game and dropped their overall record to 15-18 and 2-4 in A.I.I. Mayville State won their fourth straight game and raised their overall record to 19-8 and 4-1 in A.I.I.
Game 1 - Mayville State (N.D.) 2, Dakota State 1
Ricky Alvernaz opened the top of the second inning with a solo home run on a 0-1 count to give Mayville State a 1-0 lead.
The Trojans responded back in the bottom second frame by Jason Hershfield's solo home run on a 1-0 count to tie the game at 1-1.
Kurtis McCallum reached on base by walk to open the top of the fourth inning for the Comets. Alvernaz hit a one-out double to advace McCallum to third base. Christian Berry hit an RBI single to score McCallum as the Comets regained their lead at 2-1.
Dakota State left runners on third and first bases with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Trojans were unable to convert their scoring opportunity.
The Comets sealed the victory in the final inning as DSU went three-and-out.
Hershfield went 1-for-3 at the plate with a home run, a run scored and an RBI for DSU. Rays Roman, Ryan Steffensen, Anyelo Roman and Ryan Bourcier each added a single.
Alvernaz had a home run, a double and an RBI for Mayville State. Steer added a double. Berry, Duell Higbe and Spencer Mallonee each hit a single.
The Comets left six runners on bases. DSU had five runners left on base.
Seth Doxey (3-3) took the loss as he pitched a complete game for the Trojans. He gave up two runs on six hits. Doxey recorded six strikeouts.
Nick Anderson (2-1) tossed a complete game victory for the Comets. He allowed one run on five hits. Anderson struck out 10 DSU's batters.
Game 2 - Mayville State (N.D.) 12, Dakota State 6
The Comets jumped to a 1-0 lead in the opening inning caused by DSU's defensive error.
Anyelo Roman hit a single with two outs in the bottom first frame. Bourcier recorded a single and advanced Anyelo Roman to second base. Hershfield hit a 3-run home run as the Trojans overtook the lead at 3-1.
Bourcier opened the bottom of the third inning with a single for DSU. Hershfield hit a 2-run home run (his third home run of the day and his ninth home run of the season) to extend Trojans' lead to 5-1.
Mayville State scored four runs in the top of the fourth inning, highlighted by Kurtis McCallum's 3-run home run to tie the game at 5-5.
The Trojans regained their lead back in the bottom fourth frame. Anyelo Roman hit an RBI single to score Steffensen to grab a 6-5 lead.
The Comets added four runs in the fifth inning to earn a 9-6 lead.
Mayville State extended their lead to 12-6 with three runs scored in the top of the sixth inning.
DSU was unable to mount a comeback as the Comets secured the win.
Hershfield was 3-for-3 at the plate with two home runs, a single and recorded five RBIs for the Trojans. Anyelo Roman added two singles and an RBI. Bourcier and Chaz Palmer each had a single.
McCallum was 4-for-4 with a home run, two doubles, a single and four RBIs for Mayville State. Brad Ferraro added a double and two singles. Dusty Brend had two hits and three runs scored. Phillip Steer, Alvernaz, James Olderbak and Berry each had a single.
The Comets outhit the Trojans 14-7 in the game.
DSU committed five errors in the game compared to the Comets' two.
Josh Caven started the game for the Trojans. He pitched the first 3 2/3 innings and allowed five runs (one unearned) on eight hits. Anyelo Roman (3-3) took the loss in relief. He tossed 1 1/3 innings and gave up four unearned runs on three hits. Beau Behrend pitched 2/3 innings in relief and gave up three unearned runs on three hits. JD Farley worked the final 1 1/3 shutout innings.
Robert Page tossed the first three innings for the Comets. He allowed five runs on five hits. Aaron Dick (1-1) recorded the victory in relief. He limited DSU to one unearned run on two hits in four innings of work.
Dakota State looks to bounce back in the winning column as they conclude their four-game series with Mayville State Sunday. The doubleheader kicks off at 1 p.m. at Flynn Field.
