THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University Lady T's basketball team (3-5 overall record) plays a pair of games this week against teams from South Dakota. The Lady T's entertain their in-state rival Mount Marty (4-4) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in a regular-season action Wednesday evening. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse (with a junior varsity game starting at 4:45 p.m.). On Thursday night, Dakota State travels to USD DakotaDome in Vermillion to play in an exhibition game with NCAA Division I South Dakota (3-5). The game is slated to start at 7 p.m.
LAST MEETING: Mount Marty had won the last eight meetings in the series with Dakota State, including a season series sweep last season. The Lancers defeated the Lady T's 70-49 on Nov. 8, 2011 in Yankton and 61-37 at the DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 31, 2012. The last time DSU had defeated Mount Marty was on Dec. 30, 2004 at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Lady T's took advantage by converting 25 free-throws in 34 attempts in 68-62 victory over Mount Marty (MMC was 8-for-17 at the free-throw line). South Dakota won the last meeting with Dakota State at the Augustana Holiday Classic on Dec. 28, 2006. The Coyotes won by the score of 71-52.
LADY T'S TOP IN NATION FOR FREE-THROW PERCENTAGE: According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Monday, Dakota State tops the NAIA Division II in free-throw percentage. The Lady T's made 89 free-throws in 114 attempts (78.1 percent) through eight games this season.
DSU'S OFFENSE RANKS IN THE NATION: Dakota State ranks fifth in the nation in field goal percentage. The Lady T's record a field goal percentage of 47.2 percent. DSU averages 18.3 assists per game, which is 13th best in the nation (146 total assistsâ€”29th in the nation). The Lady T's shoot 33.3 percent from the 3-point line, ranking them 22nd in the nation. Dakota State is 25th in the nation in scoring offense per game with an average of 73.4 points. The Lady T's average six 3-pointers per game, which is 31st in the nation.
LADY T'S EXHIBITION GAMES SCHEDULE: Thursday's night game at South Dakota will mark the second exhibition game for DSU this season. The Lady T's dropped a 78-64 contest at in-state rival University of Sioux Falls on Nov. 24. Dakota State's remaining exhibition schedule includes a pair of games against NCAA Division II and members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). The Lady T's will play at Minnesota State-Mankato on Dec. 19 and Mary (N.D.) on Dec. 30.
DSU JUNIOR VARSITY NOTCH VICTORY: The Dakota State University Lady T's junior varsity team recorded a season home opener victory over in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan on Dec. 2 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Lady T's jumped to a twelve-point halftime lead and held on to defeat the Tigers by the score of 71-63.
LAST TIME OUT: The Lady T's split a pair of games last week. Dakota State recorded a 88-67 victory over Presentation (S.D.) at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 27. DSU used a 31-13 scoring run to close the first-half for a 53-35 halftime lead over the Saints. The Lady T's maintained control in double digits lead in the game's final twenty minutes. Martin Luther (Minn.) snapped DSU's two-game winning streak with a 71-59 victory on Saturday, Dec. 1 in New Ulm, Minn. The Knights used a 13-0 spurt to break a 19-19 tie into a 33-19 lead with 3:33 left in the first-half. The Lady T's regained their lead at 40-39 in the second-half, but fell short as the Knights secured the game with a 15-4 scoring run in midway through the second-half. Mount Marty went 1-1 for the week at the Cimpl Arena in Yankton. The Lancers dropped a 62-51 decision to nationally-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) on Nov. 28 and defeated Doane (Neb.) 70-58. Mount Marty improved to 2-2 in GPAC play after the victory against Doane. South Dakota, member of the Summit League, split a pair of games at the USD DakotaDome, losing to Idaho State 69-45 on Nov. 29 and defeating Utah Valley 72-48 on Dec. 1.
LADY T'S VERSUS SOUTH DAKOTA TEAMS: Dakota State is 2-1 in regular-season games against teams from South Dakota. The Lady T's defeated Oglala Lakota 112-39 on Nov. 1 and Presentation 88-67 on Nov. 27. DSU lost to in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan 82-59 on Nov. 13 at DSU Fieldhouse. The Lady T's is 0-1 in exhibition games against South Dakota's teams, losing to University of Sioux Falls 78-64 at the Stewart Center.
LADY T'S QUICK LEADERS: Katy Pillar leads the Lady T's with 12.8 points and 8.4 rebounds (42nd in the nation) per game this season. She ranks 16th in the nation in field goal percentage of 55.1 percent. Yui Onodera averages 3.9 assists per game, ranking her 39th in the nation. She accumulates a total of 31 assists through eight games this season. Julie Munson records nine steals (1.3 steals per game). Alyson Drooger ranks seventh in the nation in blocks per game (2.9) and eighth in total blocks with 23.
