MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University Lady T's junior varsity team played their first home game of the season Sunday afternoon at DSU Fieldhouse. DSU jumped to a twelve-point halftime lead and held on to a victory over in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan 71-63.
The Tigers opened the game by scoring eight straight points in the first two minutes and 44 seconds for an 8-0 lead.
Dakota State answered back by scoring eight consecutive points to tie the game at 8-8 with 14:54 remaining in the first-half.
With the game tied at 15-15 with 10:43 left before halftime, the Lady T's went on a 23-11 run to close the first half for a 38-26 halftime lead.
DSU shot 14-for-37 from the field (37.8 percent) and 4-of-8 3-pointers (50 percent) in the game's first twenty minutes. DWU was 9-for-26 (34.6 percent), including six 3 pointers in 14 attempts (42.9 percent).
The Lady T's widen to their biggest lead of the game in three occasions - 45-29 with 16:45 left, 53-37 with 12:38 left and 55-39 with 11:16 left in the second-half.
Dakota Wesleyan could not get no closer than seven points two times late in the second-half (67-60 with 34 seconds and 69-62 with 22 seconds remaining in the game).
DWU outscored DSU 37-33 in the second-half. The Tigers were held to 1-for-11 from the 3-point line in the final twenty minutes of the game.
Brittany Rosberg led the Lady T's with 16 points. She was 6-for-16 from the field, including 3-for-5 from the 3-point arc. Emily Fedders added 13 points off the bench. Jayda Swenson scored 10 points. Jaynie Spier had eight points (2-for-2 from the field and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line).
Haley Stover pulled down 10 rebounds for DSU. Swenson added seven rebounds.
Kristen Binger had 13 points and eight rebounds for the Tigers. She had two blocked shots. Abbey Fujan added 12 points and nine rebounds.
Both teams struggled from the field, shooting under 40 percent. The Lady T's shot 33.3 percent overall from the field (23-for-69) compared to DWU's 30.8 percent (20-for-65). DWU was 7-for-25 from the 3-point line (28 percent) while the Lady T's were 6-for-16 (37.5 percent).
DSU made 19 free-throws in 27 attempts (70.4 percent). DWU was 16-for-23 (69.6 percent) from the free-throw line.
The Lady T's won the rebounding battle 56-46.
Dakota State Lady T's junior varsity team returns back to action on Wednesday evening. DSU hosts Mount Marty (S.D.) with a tip-off starting at 4:45 p.m., followed by the varsity game at 7 p.m. The games will be held at the DSU Fieldhouse.
