SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -The Dakota State University Lady T's basketball team returned back to action Saturday afternoon at the Stewart Center against in-state rival University of Sioux Falls. The Lady T's began with a 10-point lead, but the Cougars escaped with a 78-64 victory.
Dakota State remained at 2-4 overall record as today's game was counted as an exhibition game. University of Sioux Falls, member of the NCAA Division II and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC), completed their non-conference schedule with a 3-1 overall record.
With the game tied at 6-6 with seventeen minutes and 10 seconds in the first-half, the Lady T's used a 18-8 scoring run to earn a 24-14 lead with 11:03 left before halftime.
USF closed the first-half with a 24-9 run to overtake the lead from the Lady T's at 38-33.
Dakota State shot 52.2 percent from the field (12-for-23) in the first-half compared to the Cougars' 41.7 percent (15-for-36). USF recorded 11 offensive rebounds and earned 15 second-chance points in the first twenty minutes of the game.
The Cougars kicked off the second-half with an 8-4 scoring run to extend their lead at 46-37 with 15:33 remaining.
The Lady T's rallied back in the next four minutes with a 14-6 run to trim their deficit to 52-51 (12:12 left in the game).
With USF leading at 54-53, the Cougars scored 12 straight points to widen their lead to 64-53 with 8:26 remaining.
DSU could get no closer than seven points at 64-57 with 7:24 left in the game.
USF outscored the Lady T's 40-31 in the second-half.
Katy Pillar led the Lady T's with 17 points. She pulled down nine rebounds. Kylie Westover added 11 points. Alyson Drooger scored 10 points off the bench. She dished out five assists and recorded a blocked shot. Cassie Jacobsen had nine points. Jacobsen and Julie Munson each had two steals.
Mikenna Greathouse had a double-double of 19 points and earned 16 boards for USF. Jaicee Ulmer added 12 points off the bench. Alyssa Rushton and Bailey Bouman each had 10 points. Chrissy Strassburg dished out six assists.
Both teams shot 42.3 percent in the game. The Lady T's were 22-for-52 from the field, including 7-for-20 from the 3-point arc (35 percent). USF made 30 baskets in 71 attempts. The Cougars had five 3-pointers in 20 attempts (25 percent).
USF outrebounded the Lady T's 49-29 in the game. The Cougars recorded 21 offensive rebounds while the Lady T's had four offensive rebounds.
DSU produced 16 assists in the game. USF had 12 assists.
Dakota State returns back to regular-season action on Tuesday night. The Lady T's return home, hosting Presentation (S.D.). Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse.
