MADISON, S.D. - In the opening day of the 2012 State Farm Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Women's Basketball Tournament Friday evening at DSU Fieldhouse, No. 4 seed Valley City State defeated No. 5 seed Dakota State 61-45 to advance to the semifinals.
Dakota State ended their season with an overall record of 7-22. The Vikings improved to 18-13.
The Trojans missed their first 12 shots of the game to allow VCSU to gain a 15-2 lead with nine minutes and eight seconds remaining in the first-half.
DSU ended its drought with a 3-pointer by Kylie Westover with 8:07 left before halftime.
The Trojans shot 26.1 percent (6-for-23) from the field in the first-half as the Vikings earned a 28-17 halftime advantage. VCSU shot 36.4 percent (12-for-33).
Dakota State trimmed their deficit to six points at 36-30 with 11:39 remaining in the game.
VCSU then scored seven straight points to regain their lead back in double digits at 43-30 with less than 10 minutes.
The Vikings maintained their control in the final 10 minutes of the game. DSU could get no closer than 11 points (47-36) with 6:37 remaining in the game.
Westover led the Trojans with 15 points. Sharee Galbraith added 10 points and earned seven rebounds off the bench. Katy Pillar had six points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Julie Munson dished out four assists and stole the ball four times.
For Valley City State, Brittany Lehner had 16 points on her 8-for-12 shooting from the field. She recorded eight rebounds. Alyssa Hummel added 11 points and nailed down eight boards. Sadiqah Jihad had a game-high eight assists. Courtney Titus recorded six steals in the game.
Dakota State shot 32.6 percent overall from the field (15-for-46) compared to the Vikings' 40.3 percent (25-for-62).
The Trojans had a slim rebounding advantage over VCSU 38-37.
DSU committed 28 turnovers in the game, while the Vikings turned the ball over 18 times.
VCSU outscored the Trojans 36-18 inside the paint.
On Saturday, No. 3 seed Cal State San Marcos (16-14) will face No. 2 seed Indiana Northwest (19-11) in the first semifinal game of the State Farm A.I.I. Women's Basketball Tournament at 1 p.m. Valley City State takes on the top seed Jamestown (26-3) in the second semifinals at 3 p.m. (VCSU and JC will meet for the fourth time this season).
The winner's of the semifinals Saturday will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament in Sioux City, Iowa on March 7-13.
