Women's Basketball - Mon, Feb. 6, 2012


THIS WEEK:  Dakota State (6-18 overall record) plays a pair of women's basketball games from the members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) this week.  The Trojans head on the road Tuesday night at RVSC-Allee Gym to visit the nationally-ranked Morningside (20-6, 14-3 GPAC) with a game time starting at 6 p.m.  On Saturday afternoon, DSU returns home at DSU Fieldhouse to host Midland (9-17, 2-15 GPAC).  Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.

EVENTS:  Parents' night and Madison Chamber of Commerce night will be held on Saturday.  Coaches versus Cancer will also be held on Saturday to help raise cancer awareness.

LAST MEETING:  Morningside won the last meeting with Dakota State 94-71 on Dec. 30, 2008 as part of Morningside Holiday Classic in Sioux City, Iowa.  The last time Trojans defeated the Mustangs was on Nov. 7, 2007 at DSU Fieldhouse in the battle of two NAIA's 'Top 10' teams.  DSU came on top by the score of 92-82 after trailing 52-48 at halftime.  Dakota State built the game's largest lead on two occasions in the early second-half, but Midland rallied back to defeat the Trojans 88-84 in overtime thriller on Jan. 7 at Midland Events Center in Fremont, Neb.  DSU maintained a 42-32 halftime advantaged and ballooned their lead to 55-37 and 57-39 with less than 16 minutes remaining in the game.  Midland roared back with a 33-15 run in the next 11 minutes to tie the game at 72.  The game was tied at 79-79 by the end of regulation and the Trojans gained their first lead of overtime at 81-79.  The Warriors went on a 6-0 run to grab an 85-81 lead with 1:33 left.  DSU trimmed MU's lead to 85-84 with 1:15 left on the clock, but the Warriors nailed down the victory with a lay-up and a free-throw in the final 40 seconds of the game.

LAST TIME OUT:  Dakota State suffered a pair of defeats from in-state rivals last week at DSU Fieldhouse.  The Trojans lost a 61-37 decision to Mount Marty on Jan. 31.  USF defeated DSU on Feb. 4 by the score of 77-37.  Morningside went 2-0 for the week and extended their winning streak to six games.  The Mustangs recorded a pair of GPAC road victories, defeating Dakota Wesleyan 68-58 on Feb. 1 in Mitchell, S.D and Nebraska Wesleyan 88-78 on Feb. 4 in Lincoln, Neb.  Midland split a  pair of GPAC home games last week, losing to nationally-ranked Hastings 76-58 on Feb. 1 and defeating Dakota Wesleyan 73-59 on Feb. 4.

RECORDS:  The Trojans are seeking their first win against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference this season.  DSU suffered losses to Dakota Wesleyan and Mount Marty twice each, Briar Cliff, Dordt (Iowa) and Midland.  Morningside is 1-2 versus former Dakota Athletic Conference teams, defeating Black Hills State 69-58 on Nov. 25.  The Mustangs suffered defeats to South Dakota Mines 77-76 on Nov. 25 and nationally-ranked Jamestown 86-74 on Dec. 29.  Midland is 1-0 versus former DAC, defeating DSU 88-84 in overtime on Jan. 7 in Fremont, Neb.

DRAINING 3s:  Kylie Westover is currently in eighth spot in the DSU women's basketball record book for most 3-pointers made in a career.  She records 99 career 3-pointers after the completion of Feb. 4 game versus University of Sioux Falls.

HAMBLIN EARNS HONOR:  Sophomore Courtney Hamblin earned an academic award for her success in academics at DSU.  The CoSIDA (College of Sports Information Director of America) has selected Hamblin to its Academic All-District 6 College Division team, released on Feb. 2.  Hamblin is a sophomore Biology major at Dakota State University.

NATIONAL RANKINGS:  According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Feb. 6, Dakota State ranks 37th in the nation in free-throw percentage (70.9 percent) and 40th in total rebound margin (+2.7).  The Trojans are 47th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (26.8).  

DSU QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Trojans in scoring with an average of 11.4 points per game.  Katy Pillar records 156 rebounds (6.5 average) this season.  Julie Munson leads the team in assists with 48 (2.3 per game) and 39 steals (1.9 per game).  Jayda Swenson records seven blocked shots (0.3 per game) this season for the Trojans.  She ranks 32nd in the nation in free-throw percentage (80.2 percent).

UP NEXT: Dakota State concludes their regular-season schedule next weekend as they travel to western South Dakota.  The Trojans face a pair of opponents from the former DAC schools.  DSU visits Black Hills State at the Donald E. Young Gymnasium in Spearfish, S.D. on Feb. 17 with a tip-off starting at 6:30 p.m. (CT)/5:30 p.m. (MT).  On Saturday, Feb. 18, the Trojans travel to the King Center in Rapid City, S.D. to play South Dakota Mines.  Game starting time is set for 5 p.m. (CT)/4 p.m. (MT).
