THIS WEEK: Dakota State (5-15 overall record) looks to snap their losing skid with a pair of games this week. The Trojans head on the road to W.E. Osmon Fieldhouse on Wednesday night to face their former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Valley City State (14-9). Tip-off is slated to start at 7 p.m. in Valley City, N.D. DSU returns home Friday night to kick off their three-game home stand. The Trojans host Trinity Bible (N.D.) (15-8). Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse.
LAST MEETING: Valley City State won the last meeting at Dakota State in the battle of former Dakota Athletic Conference schools on Jan. 8. The Vikings outscored the Trojans 38-18 inside the paint as VCSU prevailed for a 68-52 victory. Valley City State shot 7-for-11 from the field to gain a 16-4 advantage in the first eight minutes and eleven seconds of the game. The Trojans were 1-for-14 during that stretch. The Vikings held a 31-21 halftime lead and DSU got no closer than eight points (32-24 with 19:14 left in the game). DSU won the last meeting with Trinity Bible (a member of National Christian College Athletic Association) in Ellendale, N.D. on Nov. 19. The Trojans had five players scored in double digits as DSU routed the Lions 80-45. Dakota State shot 44.7 percent from the field (31-for-69) compared to the Lions' 32.7 percent (17-for-52).
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State faced three NCAA Division II schools last week. The Trojans lost at University of Sioux Falls (74-46) after gaining a nine-point lead midway through the first-half on Jan. 17. DSU dropped a pair of weekend games with Black Hills teams at DSU Fieldhouse, losing to Black Hills State 56-44 on Jan. 20 and South Dakota Mines 73-62 on Jan. 21. Valley City State hosted its Dakota Athletic Conference tip-off tournament last weekend, defeating Mayville State 55-45 and losing to No. 13 Jamestown (N.D.) 61-60 in overtime in the DAC tip-off championship game. Trinity Bible swept St. Cloud Tech 73-47 on Jan. 20 and 72-60 on Jan. 21 to remain undefeated in the NIAC. The Lions will visit United Tribes Tech Monday (tonight) and host University of Minnesota-Morris Tuesday night before making the tip to Madison on Friday night.
RECORDS VS. FORMER DAC: DSU is currently 1-6 versus former Dakota Athletic Conference teams this year. The Trojans' win came from Mayville State in a 67-60 overtime thriller at DSU Fieldhouse on Dec. 3, 2012. Valley City State is 2-1 against former DAC, defeating DSU 68-52 on Jan. 8 and Mayville State 55-45 on Jan. 21. The Vikings fell short in overtime to nationally-ranked Jamestown 61-60 in the DAC's Tip-off championship game in Valley City, N.D. on Jan. 22. Trinity Bible remains winless in five games versus former Dakota Athletic Conference teams, losing to Mayville State (twice), Dakota State, Jamestown and Valley City State.
GOING FOR CAREER WIN NO. 100: Dakota State University head women's basketball coach is going for his 100th career win this week. He is currently one win away to accomplishment this milestone.
NATIONAL RANKINGS: According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Jan. 23, Dakota State ranks 32nd in the nation in 3-point field goal percentage defense (27.8 percent) and 36th in free-throw percentage (70.7 percent). The Trojans are 38th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (27.3) and total rebound margin (+2.6).
DSU QUICK LEADERS: Kylie Westover leads the Trojans in scoring with an average of 11.2 points per game. She leads the team with four blocked shots (0.2 blocks per game). Katy Pillar records 133 rebounds (6.7 average) this season. Courtney Hamblin averages 2.3 assists per game (42 total). Julie Munson leads the team in steals with 33 (1.9 per game). Jayda Swenson ranks 42nd in the nation in free-throw percentage (79.4 percent).
