Women's Basketball - Mon, Oct. 31, 2011

THIS WEEK:  Dakota State (0-0 overall record) kicks off their 2011-12 women's basketball regular-season schedule at home on Tuesday night (6 p.m.) and on the road on Saturday (5:30 p.m.).  The Trojans host Grace (Neb.) (0-2) in DSU's season home opener at DSU Fieldhouse.  Dakota State battles with their former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Mayville State (4-0) at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse on Saturday.

ROSTER BREAKDOWN: Dakota State returns five players back from last year's team. Junior Yui Onodera and sophomores Courtney Hamblin, Cassie Jacobsen, Julie Munson and Kylie Westover are the returners for the Trojans. DSU have seven new faces to the team. They are: Kirby Bertram, Sharee Galbraith, Annalesha Kalis, Kendra Lindblad, Katy Pillar, Jaynie Spier and Jayda Swenson.

TROJANS DROP EXHIBITION GAME: The Dakota State University women's basketball team travels to Halenbeck Hall in St. Cloud, Minn. for an exhibition game with NCAA Division II St. Cloud State on Oct. 29. DSU had a brief lead (5-2) before the Huskies' 17-4 run to take a 19-9 lead with 12:49 left before halftime. The Trojans answered with a 17-7 run to tie the game at 26-26. SCSU closed the first-half with a 13-4 run for a 39-30 halftime lead. Dakota State was outscored 48-29 in the final 20 minutes of the game as the Huskies grab an 87-59 exhibition game win.

DSU IN SEASON OPENERS: Since Joe Reints took DSU women's basketball head coaching position in 2008, the Trojans are 3-0 in season openers. Dakota State defeated nationally-ranked Northwestern (IA) 85-81 on Oct. 31, 2008 at the Tyson Center in Sioux City, Iowa; at Peru State 83-77 on Oct. 30, 2009 and versus in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan 78-73 on Nov. 2, 2010.

A.I.I TOURNAMENT TO BE HOST IN MADISON: Dakota State is in their first year membership with the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.). DSU will be hosting the A.I.I. women's and men's basketball independent tournaments at DSU Fieldhouse in February.

TROJANS ADD THREE FOR 2012-13: Head coach Joe Reints announced in September that Haley Stover from Redfield, S.D., Erika Bamsey from Howard, S.D. and Emily Fedders of Yankton, S.D., have all signed letters of intent to continue their academic and athletic careers at Dakota State beginning in 2012-13.

COACHES' CORNER: Joe Reints, a native of Willow Lake, S.D., enters his fourth season at the Trojan helm. He currently holds a 93-99 career coaching record. Reints comes to DSU from Lambuth University in Jackson, Tenn. where he served as head coach of the Lady Eagles, an NAIA Division I school, for three seasons. The Lady Eagles earned the 2007 NAIA Division I National Championship. Reints had additional coaching experience with Mount Marty College, Northern State University and Texas State University.

COACH STOEBNER: Chris Stoebner returns back to South Dakota after being an assistant men's basketball coach at St. Olaf (Minn.) last season. Prior to St. Olaf, he was the girls' basketball head coach and guidance counselor at Orono High School in Long Lake, Minn. for three years. Stoebner played for South Dakota State University Jackrabbit men's basketball team during his four-year collegiate career and qualified to the regional tournament in each year. He was named to All-Conference team in his senior year and earned North Central Conference All-Academic Honorable Mention in 2002 and 2003.
