Women's Basketball - Tue, Feb. 22, 2011

The Dakota State University women's basketball team heads to western South Dakota to begin their final Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) Post-Season Tournament.  The Trojans will face the DAC's top-seed Black Hills State in the quarterfinals.  Tip-off is slated for 6:30 p.m. (CT)/5:30 p.m. (MT).  The quarterfinal game will be held at the Donald E. Young Gymnasium.

Dakota State is 6-20 overall and 2-12 in the DAC conference.  The Trojans lost the final four regular season games.  DSU suffered a pair of home losses at the DSU Fieldhouse last weekend.  Valley City State defeated the Trojans 76-67 on Feb. 18.  Dakota State lost to Jamestown 74-60 in Trojans' final home game of the season on Feb. 19.

Black Hills State is 21-6 overall and 11-3 in the conference.  The Yellow Jackets split their two games last weekend in North Dakota.  BHSU lost to Minot State 70-49 on Feb. 18.  The Yellow Jackets rallied back and defeated Dickinson State 61-55 on Feb. 19 to earn an outright DAC regular season title.

BHSU is currently ranked No. 9 in the tenth edition of the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball 'Top 25' national poll.  The final edition of the national poll will be released on March 2, after all the conference tournaments are completed.  The final poll will be used to determine the at-large bids for the NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Tournament at the Tyson Center/Gateway Arena in Sioux City, Iowa on March 9-15.

The DAC Post-Season Tournament semfinals will take place on Sunday, Feb. 27 at the highest seed remaining.  The championship game is set for Tuesday, March 1.

Black Hills State won both meetings from Dakota State this season.  The Yellow Jackets had won the last eight meetings from the Trojans, including DAC post-season games.  DSU's last win versus Black Hills State was on Jan. 18, 2008 in Madison, S.D. (72-64).

In the first meeting at the DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 15 in Madison, S.D., the Yellow Jackets defeated DSU 72-41.  Black Hills State limited the Trojans to 28.6 percent from the field in the game.  BHSU raced to a 33-18 halftime lead and outscored the Trojans 39-23 in the second-half.

Black Hills State won the second meeting 88-58 at the Donald E. Young Gymnasium in Spearfish, S.D. on Feb. 11.  The Yellow Jackets led 46-36 at halftime.  DSU were outscored in the game's final 20 minutes 42-22.

Dakota State and Black Hills State will meet for the fourth time in the DAC Post-Season Tournament.  The last time both teams met was on Feb. 22, 2009 in the quarterfinals in Spearfish, S.D.  The Yellow Jackets defeated DSU 88-70.  Black hills State and Dakota State met in the post-season semifinals in Madison, S.D. twice during the DAC era.  The Yellow Jackets defeated the Trojans 63-49 on Feb. 24, 2006.  DSU held on to defeat BHSU in a thriller that was decided at the buzzer, 85-83 on Feb. 24, 2007.
