GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK:  Dakota State (11-14 overall record) returns home for the first time Wednesday night after playing 25 straight games on the road to start the season.  DSU will kick off their 12-game home stand stretch, starting tomorrow (March 21).  The Trojans welcome their in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan (11-13) in a doubleheader.  First game is set for 5 p.m. at Flynn Field.  It was originally scheduled for Thursday at 2 p.m., but was pushed back to Wednesday due to forecast rain for Thursday.

LAST MEETING:  Dakota State won the last meeting with Dakota Wesleyan on April 14, 2010 in Mitchell, S.D.  The Trojans gained a 7-5 victory in a nine-inning game with the Tigers at the
Caldwell Park.

ABOUT DAKOTA WESLEYAN:  Dakota Wesleyan returned back to South Dakota after recording a 7-4 record in their annual spring break trip in Tucson, Arizona.  The Tigers were 4-3 versus former Dakota Athletic Conference foes in Tucson (Valley City State and Dickinson State).  DWU is currently 1-8 on the road, recording their first road win at Kansas Wesleyan 7-3 in a nine-inning game on March 4.  The Tigers were swept on the road by Sterling (Kan.) in a four-game series and Bethany (Kan.) and Kansas Wesleyan (each in a doubleheader).  Steve Gust is in his four season as DWU baseball head coach.

TROJANS ON THE ROAD:  DSU completed their first 25 games on the road schedule with an overall record of 11-14.  The most recent road trip was a four-game series at Hastings (Neb.) on March 17-18.  The Trojans earned a pair of 3-1 victories over the Broncos and suffered a pair of games (5-1 and 4-2) to earn a four-game series split with Hastings.

HOME STAND AT FLYNN FIELD:  The Trojans return home for the first time this season on Wednesday and kick off their 12-game home stand at Flynn Field.  The Trojans continue their home stand with a four-game series with their former Dakota Athletic Conference foe Jamestown (N.D.) as part of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference games on March 24-25.  DSU hosts another in-state rival team from Mount Marty with a doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m. on March 27.  On March 31 and April 1, the Trojans welcome Mayville State (N.D.) in an A.I.I. conference four-game series.   

HERSHFIELD EARNS A.I.I. MALE ATHLETE OF THE WEEK:  Jason Hershfield of Dakota State was selected by the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) as its male athlete of the week honor, announced on March 19.  He picked up a win and a save on the mound for the Trojans as they split a four-game series with Hastings (Neb.).  Hershfield improved his pitching record to 3-2 on the season and recorded his third save of the season in a pair of 3-1 victories.  He tossed a total of eight innings, allowed just one run on five hits and no walks, while striking out 10 batters.

NATIONAL RANKINGS:  According to DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Tuesday, March 20, Dakota State ranks 44th in the nation in home runs per game (0.6).  Chaz Palmer ranks first in the nation in fielding percentage (1.000).  Jason Hershfield is 24th in the nation in total saves with three, 46th in batters struck out per nine innings (9.99) and 48th in earned run average (1.89).  Seth Doxey ranks 27th in the nation in ERA with 1.53 and 39th in total earned runs allowed (6).  Anyelo Roman is 50th in the nation in total home runs (5). 

DSU QUICK LEADERS:  Anyleo Roman leads Dakota State in hits with 28 (batting average—0.354).  He records 20 RBIs this season (0.8 per game).  Rays Roman swipes 11 bases for the Trojans.  Seth Doxey leads the team in earned run average with 1.53.  Jason Hershfield average 9.99 strikeouts per nine innings (37 total strikeouts). 

A.I.I. BASEBALL INDEPENDENT TOURNAMENT:  The A.I.I. Baseball Independent Tournament will be hosted by Cal State-San Marcos on May 2-5.  Besides host-team Cal State-San Marcos, five other teams will qualify to the independent tournament.  The winner and runner-up of the independent tournament each will receive an automatic bid to the national tournament.  Cal State-San Marcos is the defending A.I.I. Baseball champions where they defeated Houston-Victoria (Texas) 10-3 in the championship game.  The NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round Tournament is held on May 10-14 on nine different campus sites (selected by the NAIA).  The Avista-NAIA World Series will be held in Lewiston, Idaho on May 25 to June 1.
