MADISON, S.D. - Jason Hershfield of Dakota State University baseball team was selected by the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) as its male athlete of the week honor, announced Monday morning.

Hershfield, a 6-foot-1 senior pitcher from San Jose, Calif., picked up a win and a save on the mound for the Trojans as they split a four-game series with Hastings (Neb.).  Hershfield improved his pitching record to 3-2 on the season and recorded his third save of the season in a pair of 3-1 victories.  He tossed a total of eight innings, allowing just one run on five hits and no walks, while striking out 10 batters.

According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Monday, Hershfield ranks 32nd in the nation in total saves with three and 47th in batters struck out per nine innings (9.99).  He also ranks 50th in the nation in earned run average (ERA) of 1.89.

Jason is the son of Randy and Cheryl Hershfield.  He is majoring in Physical Education at Dakota State University.
