McPHERSON, Kan. - The Dakota State University baseball team battled with McPherson (Kan.) Wednesday afternoon at Light Capital Stadium. The Trojans rallied back in the final inning, but the Bulldogs scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning 7-6.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 8-9. McPherson, a member of Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, won their third straight game after dropping their first eight games of the season.
Anyelo Roman hit a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to open a 2-0 lead for DSU.
The Bulldogs produced four runs in the bottom fifth frame to overtake the lead from the Trojans, 4-2.
DSU's Ryan Steffensen hit an RBI double in the top of the seventh inning to trim their deficit to 4-3.
McPherson recorded five hits and scored twice in the bottom seventh inning to extend their lead to 6-3.
The Trojans mounted a comeback in the top ninth inning with three runs scored. Steffensen recorded an RBI single and Ryan Bourcier added 2-RBI single to tie the game at 6-6.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, the Bulldogs hit a game-winning RBI single from Jordan Slaton with one out.
Steffensen had three hits - a double and two singles - with two runs scored and two RBIs for DSU. Seth Doxey added a double. Anyelo Roman and Bourcier each recorded two RBIs. Chaz Palmer had two singles. Drew Sweeter added a single.
Slaton and Victorjose Betancourt each had two singles for the Bulldogs. Dorian Shelton, Brad Stanley, Trey DeRouen, Jeremy Moore and Frank Mora each had a single.
Dakota State committed six errors in the game, while McPherson had three errors. Both teams left nine runners on base.
Josh Caven started the game on the pitching mound for DSU. He tossed 4 2/3 innings and gave up four runs (two unearned) on two hits. Doxey worked 3 1/3 innings in relief and allowed two runs on seven hits. Jason Hershfield (2-1) pitched the ninth inning and suffered the loss in 1/3 inning. He allowed one unearned run on one hit.
Curt Compagnone pitched 8 1/3 innings for the Bulldogs. He gave up four runs (one unearned) on seven hits. Taylor Werts (2-2) recorded the win as he pitched 2/3 innings. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits.
Dakota State was originally scheduled to face Friends (Kan.) in a single nine-inning game today (Thursday), but was canceled due to wet weather. The Trojans travel to Hillsboro, Kan. on Friday to visit Tabor (Kan.), receiving votes in the NAIA Preseason Coaches' Top 25 national poll. The first game of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m.
