TOWSON, Md. - Senior Andy Coy of Dakota State University (S.D.) was selected to the 2013 Capital One Academic All-AmericanÂ® College Division men's cross country and track & field first team, announced Monday. It was Coy's second consecutive year that he was named to the first team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of American (CoSIDA).
The Capital One College Division Academic All-AmericanÂ® men's cross country/track and field teams are comprised of student-athletes from NAIA, Canadian and two-year institutions. The 15 members of the Capital One College Division Academic All-AmericanÂ® men's cross country/track and field first team have an average GPA of 3.88.
Coy majors in Biology with a 3.96 GPA, hailing from Hill City, S.D. He was selected as Dakota State's Most Outstanding Male Athlete of the Year twice. Coy won the 1,000-meter run at the 2012 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championship Meet, becoming the first runner in DSU men's indoor track and field program history to capture a national title in an individual event.
Coy is a six-time NAIA All-American and seven-time All-Conference runner in track and cross country at Dakota State. He earned the NAIA All-American status four times during the indoor track & field season and two times during the outdoor track & field season.
During Coy's stellar collegiate cross country and track career at DSU, he qualified for nationals a combined 11 appearances - 4 times in indoor track, 4 times in outdoor track and 3 times in cross country.
Coy ran his career best-place finish at the 57th Annual NAIA Men's Cross Country last fall. He finished 55th with a time of 25 minutes and 43 seconds with a total of 309 runners participating in the national meet. Coy was a three-time All-Conference runner in cross country.
He claimed his sixth overall NAIA All-American in the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships by earning a runner-up honor in the 1000-meter run.
He ended his amazing DSU track career in the 2013 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National meet where he qualified for the men's 1500-meter run.
He was a two-time All-Conference runner in both indoor and outdoor track.
Coy had made numerous appearances in the Trojan track & field record book list. He owns the school record in the men's indoor 1000-meter run with a time of 2:24.94 set in 2012. In addition, he ran in a leg for DSU's 4 x 800-meter relay team to a school record of 7:43.32 with Cody Foreman, Matt Fideler and Tyler Van Peursem, which they earned NAIA All-American status in 2010 with a runner-up place finish at the national meet.
That same group also broke a DSU school record in the 4 x 800-meter relay outdoor with a time of 7:30.74 with a third-place finish at the national outdoor track meet, earning an NAIA All-American status.
Coy owns the DSU outdoor track school record time in the 800-meter run (1:50.54) and the 1500-meter run (3:47.66).
Coy earned four Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete awards - two in cross country and two in track and field - for his academic success in the classroom.
Andy is the son of Rusty and Cindy Coy.
