MARION, Ind. - Five Dakota State University runners earned NAIA All-American honor Saturday on the final day of the 62nd Annual NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at IWU Track, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University. The Trojans racked up 19 points to earn 15th-place finish at the NAIA Nationals, the most points scored and highest-place finish for DSU in an outdoor track & field national meet.
The Trojans kicked off the day with the men's marathon in the early morning. Senior Nic Penning (Hulett, Wyo.) made his second straight appearance in the men's marathon national event. He was seeded No. 15 prior to running in the full marathon. Penning clocked a time of 2 hours, 27 minutes and 30.90 seconds to earn a national runner-up honor. As a result, his time set a new DSU school record time, previously held by former NAIA All-American Chris Heezen with a time of 2:28:06 in 2007.
The DSU 4 x 100-meter relay team competed in the final on Saturday afternoon. D'Artist Williams (freshman - Madison, S.D.), Stacey Berg (senior - Winslow, Ariz.), Mark Moeller (freshman - Rosholt, S.D.) and Seth Boomsma (freshman - Crooks, S.D.) improved their DSU school record time to 40.68 seconds to earn a third-place finish. In addition, the men's 4 x 100-meter relay's time is a new collegiate record in the state of South Dakota.
Penning, Williams, Berg and Moeller earned their first NAIA Outdoor Track & Field All-American honor at Dakota State.
Boomsma raced in the NAIA men's 100-meter dash final on Saturday afternoon. He recorded a time of 10.58 seconds to gain a fourth-place finish. He earned his second NAIA Outdoor Track & Field All-American status on the same day on Saturday. It was his third overall NAIA All-American honor at DSU (his first NAIA All-American honor was at 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field Nationals).
Saturday marks the last day of the NAIA collegiate track season. It was the final career collegiate track meet this weekend for three DSU seniors that qualified for the nationals - Berg, Coy (six-time NAIA All-American) and Penning.
