MARION, Ind. - The Dakota State University men's 4 x 100-meter relay team advanced to the final after improving their DSU school record time on the first day of the 62nd Annual NAIA Men's Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at the IWU Track, hosted by Indiana Wesleyan University. Andy Coy fell short in qualifying for the NAIA men's 1500-meter run prelims, ending his stellar track career at DSU.
D'Artist Williams (freshman - Madison, S.D.), Stacey Berg (senior - Winslow, Ariz.), Mark Moeller (freshman - Rosholt, S.D.) and Seth Boomsma (freshman - Crooks, S.D.) made their first NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championship appearance Thursday afternoon. They ran in the third heat and earned a second-place finish, improving their DSU school record time of 41.02 seconds. DSU finished as the fourth-best time overall in the prelims and advanced to the NAIA men's 4 x 100-meter relay final on Saturday at 2:50 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time)/1:50 p.m. (Central Standard Time).
It was the third straight meet that DSU men's 4 x 100-meter relay team improved their Trojan school record time. They began with a new DSU school record at the Howard Wood Relays on May 3 with a time of 41.34 seconds. They improved their time to 41.26 seconds at the Concordia (Neb.) Twilight meet on May 10.
Making his fourth consecutive appearance at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championship meet, Coy (senior - Hill City, S.D.) clocked a time of three minutes and 59.37 seconds in the men's 1500-meter run prelims. He finished fifth in Heat 1. He placed 13th overall in the 21-runner field, but fell short by .02 seconds to qualify for the NAIA men's 1500-meter run final (top 12 runners advance to the final).
Coy finished his amazing collegiate track career at Dakota State as a six-time NAIA All-American. He had made numerous appearances in the Trojan track & field record book list.
Dakota State returns back to action on the second day of the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships Friday. Boomsma and Williams are scheduled to run in the men's 100-meter dash prelims at 3:10 p.m. (EST)/2:10 p.m. (CST).
The NAIA Outdoor Track & Field national meet concludes on Saturday.
