SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - The Dakota State University men's 4 x 100-meter relay team shatters a new DSU school record as the blazed to a first-place victory in the 88th Annual Howard Wood Dakota Relays held at the Howard Wood Field. The two-day event began Friday and runs through Saturday.
The Trojan 4 x 100-meter relay team - D'Artist Williams, Stacey Berg, Mark Moeller and Seth Boomsma - improved their automatic qualifying time of 41.34 seconds to claim the title, which is a new DSU school record (previous old mark was set by Dowling, Smidt, Lausen and Smith in 1994 with a time of 41.50 seconds). DSU was head of three NCAA Division II and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) schools - Augustana (S.D.), Northern State (S.D.) and University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) - in the race.
Williams placed third in the men's 200-meter dash with a time of 22.03 seconds. He was the top NAIA place finisher in the event.
Andy Quenzer finished fourth in the men's 800-meter run with a time of 1:58.28. Moeller was ninth in 2:00.22. Steve Selchert was 14th in 2:01.70. Jared Sutton placed 16th in 2:06.06. Gabe Samuelson was 17th with a time of 2:06.12.
In the women's 800-meter run, Kayla Sveen raced to a fifth-place finish with a time of 2:21.38. Stephanie Warnke finished ninth in 2:22.86. Victoria Sopko was 10th (2:29.23). Brooke Fritz finished 14th with a time of 2:35.76.
Sopko was 12th in the women's 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.32. Samuelson was 11th on the men's side, clocking a time of 54.41 seconds. Jared Truman was 12th (54.53 seconds).
Trevor Rossknecht threw a discus measurement of 133 feet and 4 inches for a fifth-place finish. He was the top NAIA place finish in the discus. Trevor Van Tilburg was 11th (128 feet, 1 inch). Ryan Gimbel recorded a measurement of 122 feet and 8 inches for a 13th-place finish.
Nic Penning earned a ninth-place finish in the men's 5000-meter run. He clocked a time of 15:29.96. Taylor Hauge was 15th in 17:29.07. Anastasia Asimakopoulos was 13th on the women's side, recording a time of 21 minutes and 39.13 seconds.
In hammer throw, Gimbel gained a seventh-place finish with a measurement of 137 feet and 11 inches. Rossknecht improved his personal hammer throw measurement record of 127 feet and 9 inches for a ninth-place finish. Van Tilburg also improved his personal record hammer throw measurement of 124 feet and 7 inches to earn a 10th-place finish. Ashley Currey was 17th-place on the women's side, throwing a measurement of 124 feet and 2 inches. Shayna Dwyer was 18th with a measurement of 105 feet and 6 inches.
Currey was 14th in the women's shot put with a measurement of 34 feet and 9.75 inches. Dwyer was 15th (33 feet, 10 inches).
Matt Fideler, student assistant coach for the Trojans, ran to a second-place finish in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase. He clocked a time of nine minutes and 18.84 seconds.
Dakota State continues their action in the second day of the Howard Wood Dakota Relays Saturday in Sioux Falls.
