DES MOINES, Iowa - Four Dakota State University men's runners competed in the 104th annual Drake Relays presented by Hy-Vee Friday at the Drake Stadium. The highlights from the Trojans are the men's 4 x 100-meter relay team improving their automatic qualifying time and Seth Boomsma's qualifying for finals in the men's 100-meter dash.
The Drake Relays featured numerous schools from all levels including NCAA Division I schools. The Trojans had a school record 13 runners competing in the Drake Relays.
In the Friday's morning session, the DSU men's 4 x 100-meter relay team - D'Artist Williams, Stacey Berg, Mark Moeller and Boomsma - improved their automatic qualifying time of 41.73 seconds for a 11th-place finish in the event. The relay team did not advance to the finals. The time is the second fastest time for DSU 4 x 100-meter relay in the Trojan Outdoor Track and Field record book.
Boomsma ran the men's 100-meter dash in the Friday's afternoon session. He clocked a time of 10.84 seconds for a seventh-place finish in the preliminaries. As a result, Boomsma advanced to Saturday's 100-meter dash final that included runners from Mississippi, Lincoln (Mo.), Iowa State, Missouri, Georgia, Iowa and Texas Southern. The men's 100-meter dash final is scheduled for 2:28 p.m. Saturday.
Dakota State continues their action Saturday.
Nic Penning will be running in the half-marathon at 8 a.m., followed by DSU's student assistant coach Matt Fideler in the 3000-meter steeplechase at 10:40 a.m. The DSU women's 4 x 800-meter relay (Stephanie Warnke, Stephanie Uher, Victoria Sopko and Kayla Sveen) race is scheduled for 10:53 a.m. The Trojans' distance medley race (Moeller, Steve Selchert, Andy Quenzer and Andy Coy) is slated for 11:07 a.m. Coy will be running in the men's 1500-meter run at 3:55 p.m.
