THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University outdoor track and field teams will be competing in two different meets this weekend. The Trojans are sending a school-record 13 runners to the Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday. The majority of the track team will be heading to Yankton, S.D. to compete in the Mount Marty Invitational.
DRAKE RELAYS: Dakota State is sending 13 runners to the 104th Annual Drake Relays on Friday and Saturday, which feature numerous schools from all levels. This is the most participants in DSU track and field program history to compete in the annual premier event. The runners that will race in the Drake Relays are Stephanie Warnke, Kayla Sveen, Stephanie Warnke and Victoria Sopko on the women's side. A total of eight men's will be attending along with student assistant coach Matt Fideler - D'Artist Williams, Stacey Berg, Mark Moeller, Seth Boomsma, Steve Selchert, Andy Quenzer, Andy Coy and Nic Penning. MOUNT MARTY INVITATIONAL: The Trojans are taking the majority of the team to the Mount Marty Invitational on Friday. The meet will be held in Yankton, S.D. The first event starts at 4:30 p.m. with the women's 3000-meter steeplechase, women's hammer throw, men's shot put, women's javelin, women's pole valut and men's/women's long jump.
BOOMSMA CONTINUES HIS DOMINANCE IN 100: Seth Boomsma claimed the men's 100-meter dash title at the Doane Relays on April 20. It was his third straight meet that Boomsma earned first-place finish in the men's 100-meter dash (Vance Butler Invitational and Sioux City Relays). He blazed in the men's 100-meter dash prelims at the Doane Relays with a time of 10.88 seconds. He clocked a time of 10.86 in the finals to earn the title.
COY QUALIFIES TO NATIONALS FOR FOURTH STRAIGHT TIME: Andy Coy, a seven-time NAIA All-American athlete at Dakota State, will be making his fourth straight NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship meet in his impressive career at DSU. He recorded an automatic qualifying time of 1:54.04 for a second-place finish in the men's 800-meter run at the Sioux City Relays on April 12.
SIX DSU RUNNERS QUALIFY FOR NAIA NATIONALS: Dakota State currently have five runners qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships. Nic Penning qualified for nationals in the men's marathon. The DSU men's 4 x 100-meter relay - Williams, Berg, Moeller and Boomsma - also qualified for the nationals. Boomsma added another national event as he qualified for 100-meter dash. Andy Coy earned his qualifying time in the men's 800-meter run after producing a second-place finish time of 1:54.04.
LAST TIME OUT: The Trojans competed in the two-day Sioux City Relays on April 12-13. Nic Penning won the men's 10,000-meter race with a time of 32 minutes and 38.75 seconds. The DSU women's 4 x 800-meter relay team (Uher, Sveen, Sopko and Warnke) produced a school record time of 9:44.43 for a second-place finish in the event. Boomsma won the men's 100-meter dash time with a time of 10.77 seconds, while Williams was second with a time of 11.03 seconds. Coy finished second in the men's 800-meter run with an automatic qualifying time of 1:54.04. Stephanie Uher was third in the women's 400-meter run with a time of 1:03.48. Stephanie Warnke placed seventh in the women's 800-meter run with a time of 2:26.49. Ryan Gimbel threw the second best measurement weight throw in DSU school record book (138 feet and 1 inch). Ashley Currey was ninth in the women's weight throw with a measurement of 107 feet and 4 inches.
COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in track and field. Cody Foreman is also an assistant track and field coach for the Trojans. Matt Fideler is the DSU track and field student assistant coach.

UP NEXT: Dakota State heads to Sioux Falls next weekend to compete in the annual Howard Woods Relay. The two-day event takes place at the Howard Wood Field.
