SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Dakota State kicked off their outdoor track and field season Saturday in the Vance Butler Memorial Invitational at the Howard Wood Field, hosted by NCAA Division II Augustana College (S.D.). The Trojans battled through the windy conditions as they had a stellar day, which included three first-place finishers. In addition, DSU men's relay team and Seth Boomsma qualified for NAIA Nationals.
The Vance Butler Memorial Invitational featured schools from NCAA and NAIA levels.
The Trojan men's 4 x 100-meter relay team - D'Artist Williams, Stacey Berg, Mark Moeller and Boomsma - captured the title with a time of 41.96 seconds. As a result, the relay team qualified for the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships. The 41.96 seconds is the second fastest in the DSU school record book.
Dakota State dominated the men's 100-meter dash with three runners placing in the top three. Boomsma had set a national qualifying mark time of 10.59 for a first-place finish. Williams was second with a time of 10.86 seconds, followed by Stacey Berg who finished third in 10.96 seconds. Zach Ely was 17th in 11.58 seconds.
Berg finished fourth in the men's 200-meter dash. He recorded a time of 22.21 seconds.
Andy Coy won the men's 800-meter run. He clocked a time of 1:57.35. Steve Selchert placed eighth with a time of 2:01.09. Andy Quenzer ran a time of 2:02.60 for a 17th-place finish. Nic Penning was 29th (2:10.36), Jared Sutton 30th (2:14.94) and Taylor Hauge 31st (2:17.97).
DSU had four runners placed in the top 10 men's 110-meter hurdles event. David Sotir finished fourth with a time of 15.97 seconds. Justin Templeton was seventh (16.23 seconds), Ely eighth (16.28 seconds) and Chad Pelkfoer ninth (16.39 seconds).
Templeton clocked a time of 1:00.56 for a seventh-place finish in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Pelkofer was eighth in 1:00.77 and Sotir placed 12th in 1:02.61.
Stephanie Warnke was fourth in the women's 800-meter run. She ran a time of 2:25.20. Kayla Sveen was eighth in 2:27.28, followed by Victoria Sopko in 2:28.12. Brooke Fritz placed 19th in 2:37.77.
Summer Bronson ran a time of 1:09.14 for a sixth-place finish in the women's 400-meter hurdles. She finished seventh in the women's 100-meter hurdles in 16.49 seconds.
In the 400-meter dash, Stephanie Uher recorded a time of 1:02.40 for a sixth-place finish on the women's side. Gabe Samuelson was 23rd in 54.89 seconds on the men's side, while Jared Truman placed 26th in 55.62 seconds.
Penning was 11th in the men's 1500-meter run in 4:17.69. Sutton placed 14th (4:30.00), followed by Hauge 15th place (4:31.41). Anastasia Asimakopoulos placed 19th in 5:46.81 on the women's side. Amber Wiebenga finished 22nd (6:14.21).
In throws, Trevor Rossknecht threw a discus measurement of 41.46 meters for an eighth-place finish on the men's side. Trevor Van Tilburg was 10th (39.45 meters) and Ryan Gimbel placed 14th (37.60 meters). Ashley Currey was 14th on the women's side with a measurement of 34.08 meters. Dwyer placed 18th (30.34 meters).
Gimbel threw a measurement of 12.67 meters for a 13th place finish in the men's shot put. Currey was 23rd (9.82 meters) and Dwyer placed 26th (9.58 meters) in the women's shot put.
On Friday, Gimbel earned an eighth-place finish by recording a measurement of 40.86 meters in the men's weight throw. Rossknecht was 13th (35.92 meters) and Van Tilburg 15th (34.17 meters). Currey finished with a measurement of 30.17 meters for a 26th-place finish on the women's side. Dwyer was 28th with a measurement of 29.39 meters.
The Trojan men's 4 x 400-meter relay finished sixth with a time of 3:29.88. The women's 4 x 400-meter relay was eighth in 4:18.43.
Dakota State returns back to action next weekend. The Trojans compete in the two-day Sioux City Relays held in Sioux City, Iowa on Friday, April 12 and Saturday, April 13.
