THIS WEEK: Dakota State will be sending seven runners - Seth Boomsma, Andy Coy, Brooke Fritz, Kayla Sveen, Stephanie Uher, Stephanie Warnke and D'Artist Williams - to the 48th Annual Men's and 33rd Annual Women's' Indoor Track & Field National Championships. The three-day national meet gets underway on thursday, Feb. 28 and runs through Saturday, March 2. The meet will be held at the SPIRE Institute Track and Field Sports Complex in Geneva, Ohio.
NAIA NATIONAL MEET: For the third-straight year, the SPIRE Institute will serve as the host venue. There are over 130 men's and women's teams that will make the tip to Geneva. The championships begin on Thursday with the men's heptathlon at 1 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time) and the women's pentathlon at 1:30 p.m. (EST). The track events get underway at 4:45 p.m. (EST). The track events are scheduled to start at 12:25 p.m. (EST) on Friday and 12:35 p.m. (EST) on Saturday. There will be a championship ceremony on Saturday at 12 noon (EST). The awards ceremonies are slated for 4:30 p.m. (EST) on Saturday. The top six athletes in each event and top four relay teams will earn team points and achieve NAIA All-American status.

COY MAKES FOURTH NATIONAL INDOOR TRACK APPAERANCE: Senior Andy Coy (Hill City, S.D.) will be making his fourth straight appearance at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. He is a three-time NAIA Indoor Track & Field All-American. Coy became the first DSU's men's indoor track and field athlete in program history to capture a national champion in an individual event as he won the men's 1000-meter run on March 3, 2012, producing his career-best and DSU school record time of 2:24.94. Currently, Coy is seeded second in the event with a time of 2:29.16 (Buena Vista Relays on Feb. 16). He is scheduled to race in the men's 1000-meter run semifinals on Friday at 5 p.m. (EST), which a total of 20 runners are expected to run in the event. The men's 1000-meter run final is set for Saturday at 1:55 p.m. (EST).
TWO DSU RUNNERS IN 60-METER DASH: Dakota State will have two runners - Seth Boomsma (sophomore - Crooks, S.D.) and D'Artist Williams (freshman - Madison, S.D.) competing in the 60-meter dash at the NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Both runners will be making their first appearance in the NAIA national meet. Boomsma is seeded third in the event with a time of 6.77 seconds (from Iowa State Open on Jan. 19), which is a current DSU school record time. Williams qualified for the national meet in the final regular-season indoor track meet at the Buena Vista Relays on Feb. 16. He recorded a time of 6.91 seconds and seeded 13th in the event. A total of 21 runners are scheduled to race in the 60-meter dash trials on Friday at 1:50 p.m. (EST). The semifinals take place on Friday at 4:05 p.m. (EST). The 60-meter dash final is scheduled for Saturday at 1:25 p.m. (EST).
UHER PREPARES FOR 600-METER RUN: Stephanie Uher is among 18 runners preparing for the 600-meter run on Friday at 3:25 p.m. (EST). She is seeded 12th with a time of 1:37.68, which is a DSU school record time. She recorded her DSU record time in the Iowa State Open on Jan. 19. The women's 600-meter final is set for 1:05 p.m. (EST) on Saturday.
DSU WOMEN'S 4 x 800-METER RELAY TEAM: Dakota State women's 4 x 800-meter relay team is scheduled to race in the semifinals on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. (EST). The members of the relay team are Sveen (freshman - Janesville, Minn.), Warnke (senior - Fairfax, S.D.), Fritz (freshman - New Effington, S.D.) and Uher (senior - Mitchell, S.D.). There are a total of 23 teams competing in the women's 4 x 800-meter relay. DSU women's 4 x 800-meter relay team qualified for the national meet by clocking a time of nine minutes and 51.34 seconds in the Buena Vista Open on Jan. 26. The 4 x 800-meter relay final is slated for 6:45 p.m. (EST) on Friday.
FIRST NAIA INDOOR TRACK & FIELD NATIONALS APPEARANCE: Five DSU runners will be making their first NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships this weekend. They are Boomsma, Fritz, Sveen, Uher and Williams. Coy had qualified in all four NAIA Indoor Track & Field nationals in his stellar collegiate track career at Dakota State. Warnke will be making her third indoor track national appearance.

COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in track and field. Cody Foreman is also an assistant track and field coach for the Trojans. Matt Fideler is the DSU track and field student assistant coach.
UP NEXT: The outdoor track and field season kicks off on March 28. Dakota State will host its own meet, Trojan Invitational, at the Trojan Field in Madison, S.D.
