THIS WEEK: Dakota State will be taking four athletes to the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska, on Friday and Saturday. The majority of the Trojan indoor track and field squad will be making their second straight trip to the Storm Lake, Iowa. DSU competes in the Dennis Young Classic, hosted by Buena Vista University, on Saturday.
FRANK SEVIGNE HUSKER INVITATIONAL: Seth Boomsma, Andy Coy, Stephanie Uher and D'Artist Williams will be running in the two-day event at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in Lincoln, Neb. This year mark the 38th year that Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational had been hosted by the University of Nebraska, which features numerous schools from NCAA and NAIA levels. On Friday evening, Boomsma and Williams will be running in the 60-meter dash prelims scheduled for 6:57 p.m. After the prelims on Friday, there is a 60-meter dash consolation final on Saturday at 2:47 p.m., followed by 60-meter finals at 2:50 p.m. Stephanie Uher runs in the women's 600-meter run slated for 12:48 p.m. Andy Coy (and student assistant coach Matt Fideler) are scheduled to run at 12:15 p.m.
DENNIS YOUNG CLASSIC: The Trojans will make their second straight trip to the Lamberti Recreation Center/Dennis Young Track on Saturday. DSU made their first trip to Storm Lake, Iowa on Jan. 26. The Trojans are scheduled to make another trip there on Feb. 16. The first field events are slated to start at 9 a.m. with the weight throw, long jump, high jump and pole vault. Running events are scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. with the 4 x 800-meter relays.
NAIA INDOOR TRACK & FIELD QUALIFIERS: Dakota State currently has six athletes qualified for the NAIA Indoor Track and Field Championships. Seth Boomsma qualified for the men's 60-meter dash. He is currently the second fastest time in the NAIA with a DSU school record time of 6.77 seconds, just .01 seconds behind the fastest runner in the NAIA (David Walters - Langston, Okla.). Andy Coy records the second fastest time in the NAIA in men's one-mile run with a time of 4:13.53 (Doug Benson of Eastern Oregon currently owns the fastest time of 4:11.79). Coy also qualified for the nationals in the men's 800-meter run. He is currently the third fastest time in the NAIA with a time of 1:53.88. Stephanie Uher recorded a national qualifying time in the women's 600-meter run. She clocked a time of 1:28.43. The women's 4 x 800-meter relay team (Kayla Sveen, Stephanie Warnke, Brooke Fritz and Uher) qualified for the NAIA Nationals by clocking a national qualifying time of 9:51.34 for a second-place finish at the Buena Vista Open on Jan. 26.
BOOMSMA SET MEET RECORD: Seth Boomsma set the Buena Vista Open's facility and meet record in the men's 55-meter dash on Jan. 26. He clocked a time of 6.33 seconds to capture a first-place in the event. Boomsma had placed first in three occasions this season - 60-meter dash at the Minnesota State-Mankato Open on Dec. 8; 55-meter dash at the Dordt Invitational on Jan. 12 and 55-meter dash at the Buena Vista Open on Jan. 26.
GIMBEL SCHOOL RECORD IN WEIGHT THROW: Ryan Gimbel continues to improve his personal best and DSU school record in the men's weight throw. On Jan. 26, he captured the individual title with a new record measurement of 50 feet and .5 inches. Gimbel broke his previous old record mark of 49 feet and 8.5 inches.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State had a stellar day at the Buena Vista Open on Jan. 26. DSU women's 4 x 800-meter relay team clocked a national qualifying time, Boomsma's facility and meet record time in the men's 55-meter dash, Andy Coy's automatic qualifying time in the men's 800-meter run and Gimbel's first-place in the men's weight throw highlighted the day. Three DSU women's runners placed in the top 8 in the 800-meter run (Warnke - 2nd - 2:25.90; Sveen - 4th - 2:27.95 and Fritz - 7th - 2:35.70). Nic Penning was second in the men's one-mile run in 4:29.51. Summer Bronson placed third in the women's 55-meter hurdles with a time of 9.19 seconds. Williams clocked a time of 23.30 for a fourth-place finish in the men's 200-meter dash. Uher finished fourth in the women's 400-meter dash in 1:02.22. Victoria Sopko ran a time of 1:49.20 for a fourth-place finish in the women's 600-meter run.
COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his second year as an assistant coach in track and field. Cody Foreman is also an assistant track and field coach for the Trojans. Matt Fideler is the DSU track and field student assistant coach.
