THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University outdoor track and field teams head to Sioux Falls, S.D. Friday and Saturday to compete in the University of Sioux Falls Invitational. The invitational will feature high school and college meets to be held at Lillibridge Track in southeast Sioux Falls area.
USF INVITATIONAL: The University of Sioux Falls hosts the invitational this weekend. Usually on the first weekend of May, the Howard Wood Relays take place in Sioux Falls. The Howard Woods Relay will not be held this year due to remodel and construction at Howard Wood field. The meet kicks off at 10 a.m. on each day. The first college event on Friday is slated to start at 10:35 a.m. with the women's 100-meter hurdles. The women's and men's 5000-meter runs kicks off Saturday's running events. The majority of college field events take place on Saturday, starting with the men's discus throw, women's shot put and women's & men's long jumps. TROJANS BREAK RECORDS AT DRAKE RELAYS: The Trojans produced strong performances in two events at the Drake Relay on Saturday morning, April 28. The DSU men's medley relay - Andy Coy, Stacey Berg, Andy Quenzer and Matt Fideler - produced a time of 10 minutes and 7.23 seconds for a seventh-place finish. As a result, the time was the second fastest time in DSU record book. Approximately two hours later, Fideler ran in the men's 3000-meter steeplecase and recorded a top NAIA place finisher. The top seven place finishers in the event were from NCAA Division I schools (Eastern Illinois, Air Force, DePaul, Illinois, Indiana State, University of South Dakota and Kansas State). He improved his personal best, DSU school record and national qualifying time of 9:11.41 for an eighth-place finish.
NATIONAL QUALIFIERS: DSU currently have three distance runners qualified for NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship. Nic Penning recorded a national qualifying time in the Midland Half-Marathon Meet on March 10 in Fremont, Neb. The 13.1 mile meet, hosted by Midland University, gave individuals an opportunity to compete for a bid in marathon for NAIA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in late May. Penning punched his ticket for nationals as he recorded a time of one hour, 13 minutes and 56 seconds. Andy Coy improved his national qualifying time of 1:52.27 in the men's 800-meter run and a second-place finish in the Sioux City Relays on April 13. He also qualified for the men's 1500-meter run on April 21 with a time of 3:56.55. Matt Fideler improved his national qualifying time in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase at Drake Relay on April 28. He produced a time of 9:11.41 for an eighth-place finish at the meet. The NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championship meet will be held in Marion, Ind. on May 24-26.
