THIS WEEK: Dakota State runners return home Saturday morning as they host the Herb Blakely Invitational. The women's 5K race is slated to start at 10:30 a.m., with the men's 8K race to follow at approximately 11:15 a.m. The races will be held at the Madison Country Club golf course, west of Madison.
HERB BLAKELY INVITATIONAL: Nine teams are scheduled to compete in the Herb Blakely Invitational, in honor of long-time former Trojan cross country/track & field head coach. As of Thursday, the following teams are scheduled to run on Saturday: Dakota State (S.D.), Dakota State Alumni, Briar Cliff (Iowa), Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), Iowa Lakes Community College, Iowa Western, Mount Marty (S.D.), Northwestern (Iowa) and Wayne State (Neb.). Over a total of 150 runners (73-women's and 85-men's) are expected to compete in the meet.
2012 HERB BLAKELY INVITATIONAL: Three DSU runners placed in the top 10 in last year's Herb Blakely Invitational. In the men's race, Andy Coy was second with a time of 26 minutes and 22 seconds. Nic Penning was fifth in 27:39 and Taylor Hauge placed 10th with a time of 28:50. Kayla Sveen ran a time of 22:02 to place ninth in the women's race. Mount Marty (S.D.) swept the team titles with the women scoring 16 points and men's 17 points.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State ran 'under the lights' in a unique event at Yankton Trail in Sioux Falls on Sept. 6. The Trojans kicked off the season running in the Augustana (S.D.) Twilight meet, which featured numerous runners from the Midwest region including all levels up to NCAA Division I. DSU men's cross country team finished tied for 16th with Mount Marty with 463 points. Michael Hoffman returned back after taking a medical redshirt last season and ran a time of 20:20.58 for a 49th place finish. Hauge was 116th in 21:30.70. On the women's side, Sveen recorded a time of 21:58.21 for a 176th-place finish. Anastasia Gentles placed 183rd with a time of 22:37.57.
COACHES' CORNER: Anthony Drealan is entering his first year as Dakota State University head cross country coach and his third with the program. In the past two years, Drealan's distance runners enjoyed terrific success at the national level. Drealan is originally from Fulda, Minn., and graduated in May 2011 from Dakota State University with a degree in Business Education. While at Dakota State, Drealan competed for the Trojan cross country and track teams. Drealan holds numerous school records, including the indoor and outdoor Distance Medley Relay (DMR), as well as the outdoor 5000-meter record. Drealan was a two-time NAIA All-American, once as a part of a national runner up DMR squad at the 2010 NAIA National Indoor Track and Field Championships, and also at the 2009 NAIA National Cross Country Championships. Drealan also helped DSU win its first-ever Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) championship in cross country during the fall of 2009. Drealan completed his master's degree in Health and Human Performance through Adams State University in June 2013. He resides in Madison, S.D with his wife Samantha (Warnke). He will be assisted by long-time DSU cross country/track coach Buzz Stevenson and Cody Foreman.

UP NEXT: Dakota State takes a week off before returning back to action on Saturday, Sept. 28. The Trojans travel to St. Paul, Minn. to complete in the annual Roy Griak Invitational that features quality runners from all levels in the Midwest region. The meet is hosted by the University of Minnesota.
