SIOUX CENTER, Iowa - The Dakota State University women's and men's indoor track and field teams opened their season on Saturday. The Trojans competed in the Dordt Invitational at the Recreation Center. DSU qualified two athletes for NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships.
Host-team Dordt, Dakota State, Morningside, Briar Cliff, Dakota Wesleyan, Northwestern (Iowa), Mount Marty, University of Sioux Falls and NCAA Division II Wayne State participated in the meet.
Danielle Rowe qualified for NAIA nationals for her third straight year in women's high jump. She won the individual title with a jump of five feet and 3.75 inches. Rowe finished 15th in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.81 seconds.
Brittany Young captured second-place finish in the women's 600-meter run. She finished with a time of one minute and 40.36 seconds.
Amber Krogstad and Stephanie Uher were tied for seventh in high jump. They both jumped the height of four feet and 8.25 inches.
Krogstad placed fifth in the women's triple jump with a measurement of 34 feet and 3.5 inches. She was seventh in the long jump with (15 feet and 10.25 inches).
Other women's place finishers are: Brandi Gaul (21st in 55-meter dash - 8 seconds and 16th in 200-meter dash in 28.74 seconds); Laura Porch (24th in 55-meter dash - 8.14 seconds and 26th in 200-meter dash - 30.13 seconds); Uher (25th in 55-meter dash - 8.16 seconds); Claire Beck (30th in 55-meter dash - 8.28 seconds and 27th in 200-meter dash - 30.16 seconds); Karisa Hartje (31st in 200-meter dash - 31.15 seconds); Summer Bronson (11th in 400-meter dash - 1:07 and 11th in 55-meter hurdles - 9.46 seconds); and Sara Schultz (18th in 800-meter run - 2:49.03).
DSU women's 4 x 400-meter relay team placed seventh with a time of 4:20.75.
In the men's 600-meter run, Andy Coy placed second in 1:22.43. He fell .02 seconds behind to Josiah Luttjeboer of Dordt. As a result, Coy qualified for NAIA nationals. Thomas Kjerengtroen was seventh with a time of 1:26.95.
Devon Berkness finished second in the men's 3000-meter run. He finished with a time of 8:55.79. Michael Hoffman was seventh in 9:40.52.
Stacey Berg captured fourth-place finish in the men's long jump with a measurement of 21 feet and 6.75 inches. He was ninth in the men's 55-meter dash with a time of 6.79 seconds. Berg was 11th in the 200-meter dash in 24.06 seconds.
In the men's shot put, Shane Whidby placed sixth with a measurement of 44 feet and 5.25 inches. Jeff Rieger was eighth (42 feet and 1.5 inches). Whidby was seventh in the weight throw (39 feet and 6.5 inches).
Nate Schultz finished in a tie for seventh place in the men's high jump with a jump measurement of five feet and eight inches.
Other men's place finishers are: Chance Clason (29th in 55-meter dash - 7.02 seconds and 26th in 200-meter dash - 24.86 seconds); Phil Carmody (37th in 7.17 seconds, 27th in 200-meter dash - 24.90 seconds and 18th in long jump - 19 feet and 0.5 inches); Ryan Huizenga (43rd in 55-meter dash - 7.38 seconds); Jordy Peterson (34th in 200-meter dash - 25.62 seconds, 20th in long jump - 18 feet and 8 inches and 8th in triple jump - 38 feet and 4.75 inches); Keith Moe (35th in 200-meter dash - 25.67 seconds and 29th in 400-meter dash - 57.48 seconds); Joshua Scott (43rd in 200-meter dash - 27.42 seconds and 31st in 400-meter dash - 1:01.44); Jared Mengenhausen (14th in 400-meter dash - 54.01 seconds); Gabe Samuelson (26th in 400-meter dash - 55.24 seconds); Andy Quenzer (11th in 600-meter run - 1:28.05); Kace Groff (19th in one-mile run - 5:01.09); Ryan Huizenga (11th in 55-meter hurdles - 8.90 seconds); and Ryan Gimbel (8th in weight throw - 33 feet and 2 inches and 14th in shot put - 40 feet and 2 inches).
Dakota State returns back to action next Saturday (Jan. 22). The Trojans compete in the Wayne State Invitational in Wayne, Neb.
