The Dakota State University women's and men's indoor track and field teams will open their 2010-211 season on Saturday morning. The Trojans will travel to Wayne, Neb. to compete in the Wayne State Wildcat Pre-season Open. The meet will be held at the WSC Recreation Center. The field event is expected to begin at 10 a.m. and the running events will start at approximately 1 p.m.
The Trojan women's indoor track and field team is returning two NAIA All-American performers from last year's NAIA Indoor Track and Field National Championships. Brittany Young placed 5th in the 800-meter run last year at the national, making it her first All-American award of her collegiate career. Danielle Rowe recorded her third NAIA All-American honor as she placed 4th in the high jump at nationals.
"It should be a very exciting season," said Mike Nekuda, DSU women's track and field head coach. "We have a good core group of ladies that will be competitive at the conference meet."
DSU men's track and field team is coming off their best performance since joining the DAC conference. The team finished second in the DAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Trojans return the following letter winners: Andy Quenzer, Andy Coy, Devon Berkness, Jared Mengenhausen, Jeff Reiger, Jared Schlobohm, Matt Glick, Matt Fideler, Mike Hoffman, Philip Carmody and Stacey Berg.
"We have a good nucleus returning, along with a good group of freshman," said Buzz Stevenson, Trojan men's track and field head coach. "We hope to continue the success from last year. We are looking forward to the Wayne State meet to see where we are at in our training."
