MADISON, S.D. – The North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) released its inaugural coaches' preseason men's basketball poll on Thursday, and the league coaches picked Dakota State (S.D.) to win the league title. The Trojans are coming off a historic school record 2012-13 season that included back-to-back conference tournament titles, national tournament qualifier and school-record victories.
Dakota State received all five first-place votes and tallied 25 points in the NSAA coaches' preseason poll. Jamestown (N.D.) recorded 19 points to finish second in the poll. Mayville State (N.D.) is third, followed by Valley City State (N.D.) (11 points) and Presentation (S.D.) fifth (5 points).
The Trojans posted 25 victories last season (25-9 overall record), the most victories ever in DSU men's basketball program history. Dakota State won back-to-back Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference postseason tournament for the first time in team history.
DSU went to the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. last March. The Trojans advanced to the NAIA's 'Elite Eight' round for the first time since 1992 (Final Four).
Dakota State burst into the 2012-13 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Postseason national poll for the first time in school history at No. 14 (tie).
The Trojans officially begin their 2013-14 season with two straight home games against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans host Mount Marty (S.D.) on Oct. 30 and NAIA's national qualifier Northwestern (Iowa) on Nov. 5. Both games tip-off at 7 p.m.
