MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State (S.D.) outhit Saint Mary (Neb.) 59-45 Saturday afternoon at the Lied Fitness Center to earn a 3-1 match victory. The Trojans snapped their nine-match losing skid by the scores of 22-25, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 6-22. Saint Mary, member of the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC), lost their third straight match and dropped their overall record to 15-12.
Saint Mary won the first set by outhitting the Trojans 15-12 and .163 to .093. However, the Trojans bounced back and hit well above .200 to win the final three sets of the match.
DSU hit .238 in the second set (18 kills), .204 in the third set (10 kills) and .235 in the fourth set (13 kills). Saint Mary was held to .114 hitting efficiency (10 kills) in the second set, .078 (12 kills) in the third set and .000 (8 kills) in the fourth set.
Katherine Gonzalez had 23 digs for DSU's defense. Allison Thielsen added 18 digs. Viesselman had 10 digs.
Jessica Kuehner led the Flames with 11 kills. Jamie Carlson added nine kills. Mallory Babic had eight kills.
Shelby Easley produced 24 set assists for Saint Mary. Adrienne Mahoney had 16 assists and 12 digs.
Baylee Collins had a match-high 25 digs for the Flames. Babic had 14 digs. Aysha Janssen recorded 11 digs.
Dakota State hit .185 in the match compared to Saint Mary .098. The Trojans had 59 kills with 25 attack errors in 184 attempts. The Flames committed 29 errors in 164 attempts.
DSU tied a season-high 10 blocks, while the Flames had 6 blocks.
Dakota State looks to make it two straight wins as they return home on Wednesday night. The Trojans welcome their long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The non-conference volleyball match is set for 7 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse.
