THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University volleyball team (6-22 overall record) welcomes their long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (7-21) Wednesday evening at DSU Fieldhosue (Camouflage Night). The Trojan volleyball team will be having their Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night. First serve is set for 7 p.m. On Friday, DSU heads to Forest City, Iowa to play in the Waldorf (Iowa) Triangular. The Trojans play Central Baptist (Ark.) (4-20) at 5:30 p.m. and host-team Waldorf (19-20) at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Hanson Fieldhouse.
DSU FACULTY/STAFF APPRECIATION NIGHT: The Dakota State University volleyball team will be hosting the faculty/staff appreciation night in their home volleyball match versus Dakota Wesleyan. Stick around after the match as the Trojan volleyball team will be serving ice cream social to all DSU faculty and staff.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State defeated Dakota Wesleyan 3-1 (25-15, 26-24, 11-25 and 25-8) as part of the Corn Palace Classic on Aug. 31 in Mitchell, S.D. The Trojans hit .208 in the match compared to the Tigers .054. DSU outhit DWU 47-35 and recorded seven service aces in the match. Dakota State will play Central Baptist in both teams' first-ever meeting. Waldorf won the last meeting with the Trojans with a five-set thriller on Sept. 1, 2012. The Warriors held on to the victory by the scores of 25-23, 24-26, 19-25, 25-21 and 15-8.
TROJANS SNAP LOSING SKID: The Trojans ended their nine-match losing skid with a 3-1 road victory at Saint Mary (Neb.) on Oct. 19 in Omaha. DSU dropped the first set 22-25, but bounced back by winning the final three sets by the scores of 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18 to record their victory in a month. The Trojans recorded their first win in three meetings with Saint Mary this season. Dakota State will attempt to make it two straight wins on Wednesday as they are seeking for their first home victory this season.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State went 1-2 for the week as they dropped a five-set home conference thriller to Presentation (S.D.) on Oct. 16. The Saints rallied back from 0-2 deficit to record a 3-2 victory over the Trojans by the scores of 21-25, 15-25, 25-15, 25-23 and 15-13. The Trojans dropped a 3-0 road contest at Concordia (Neb.) on Oct. 18, but ended their losing streak with a 3-1 road victory at Saint Mary (Neb.) on Oct. 19. Dakota Wesleyan went 1-2 for the week as they defeated Trinity Bible (N.D.) 3-0 on Oct. 16. The Tigers dropped a pair of Great Plains Athletic Conference matches to Briar Cliff (Iowa) 3-0 on Oct. 15 and Nebraska Wesleyan 3-0 on Oct. 19, remaining winless in 11 GPAC matches. Central Baptist lost their 10th straight match with a 3-0 defeat to College of the Ozarks (Mo.) on Oct. 21. Waldorf went 2-2 in their own tournament, including a pair of 3-0 victories over York (Neb.) on Oct. 18 and Valley City State (N.D.) on Oct. 19. The Warriors lost to Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) 3-1 on Oct. 18 and Mayville State (N.D.) 3-0 on Oct. 19.
TEAM LEADERS: Caitlin Pick leads the Trojans' offense attack with 246 kills this season —2.5 kills per set. She smashed a career-high 20 kills in 3-1 road victory at Saint Mary (Neb.) on Oct. 19. She records 46 blocks (0.5 blocks per set). Kelci Viesselman accumulates 17 service aces this season (0.2 service aces). Stacey Schuller, second in the DSU volleyball record book for most career assists, leads the Trojans with 525 assists (5.4 assists per set). Katherine Gonzalez leads the Trojans' defense and North Star Athletic Association in digs per set with 4.8 digs. She amassed 436 digs in 26 matches this season.
DSU JUNIOR VARSITY ENDS STELLAR SEASON: The Dakota State University junior varsity volleyball team ended their season with a 2-0 road loss at Concordia (Neb.). The Trojans' junior varsity team completed their 2013 schedule with an overall record of 7-7 and 3-2 in North star Athletic Association conference play.
GONZALEZ RANKS NATIONALLY: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Tuesday, Katherine Gonzalez is ranked in two different categories. She is ranked 40th in the nation in total digs (436). Gonzalez is 48th in the nation in digs per set with an average of 4.8 digs. She leads the North Star Athletic Association conference in digs per set.
DOUBLE DIGITS ATTACKS: Caitlin Pick had recorded double digits in attacks six times in the last eight matches, including a career-high 20 kills in 3-1 victory over Saint Mary (Neb.) on Oct. 19. She recorded double digits kills in the last four home matches at the DSU Fieldhouse. Brittney Anderson had recorded six double digits kills this season, most recently with 14 kills at Saint Mary. Kelci Viesselman tallied her third double digit kills on Oct. 19 with 11 kills at Saint Mary.
KEEP BLOCKING: Dakota State tied a season-high 10 blocks in 3-1 victory at Saint Mary on Oct. 19 in Omaha. Caitlin Pick and Haley Hillestad each lead the team with 46 blocks (0.5 blocks per set). Hillestad averages 0.8 blocks per set while Pick averages 0.5 blocks per set. Brittney Anderson and Tessa Weeldreyer each have 29 blocks this season, averaging 0.3 blocks per set.
TWO-SETTERS: Dakota State used two setters this season, led by Stacey Schuller and Kaylee Vander Wal. Both setters combined for 766 set assists this season. Schuller leads the team with 525 set assists and averages 5.4 assists per set. Vander Wal records 241 assists (3.4 assists per set) for the Trojans.
NSAA CONFERENCE POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT: The inaugural North Star Athletic Association Volleyball Conference Postseason Tournament kicks off on Saturday, Nov. 2 with No.5 seed hosting No. 4 seed. The semifinals take place on Nov. 6 at the highest two seeds as No. 3 seed travels to No. 2 seed and No.1 seed hosting the winner of No. 4/No. 5 match-up. The NSAA Volleyball Conference Postseason Tournament's championship game is slated for Saturday, Nov. 9 at the highest remaining seed. The pairings will be determined after the final NSAA conference regular-season volleyball match on Wednesday night.
DSU REGULAR-SEASON HOME FINALE: Dakota State will play in their final regular-season home finale against NCAA Division II and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NSIC) member—Sioux Falls (S.D.). First serve is set for 7 p.m. at the DSU Fieldhouse.
NSAA CONFERENCE STANDINGS: Jamestown (N.D.) (7-0 conference record) already clinched their first-ever North Star Athletic Conference regular-season outright after posting a 3-0 sweep over Mayville State (N.D.) on Oct. 16. Mayville State records a 5-2 conference record for a second-place standing in the NSAA. Valley City State (N.D.) is third with 3-4 NSAA conference record, followed by Dakota State (S.D.) fourth with 2-6 conference record and Presentation (S.D.) fifth with 1-6 NSAA record.
COACHES' CORNER: Amy Veenhof enters her fifth season as head coach at Dakota State. She has coached three all-conference players and seven NAIA Academic All-American scholar athletes. Her teams had been named to NAIA Scholar Team three times. Megan Kusler is in her second season as an assistant coach. Tom Mettler enters his first year as a student assistant coach.
