MADISON, S.D. – Three Dakota State University volleyball players smashed double digits in kills and recorded their second straight victory by defeating long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) in four sets Wednesday evening at the DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans won by the scores of 25-19, 18-25, 25-16 and 25-19 to earn a season series sweep over DWU this season.
Dakota State, which won their first home match this season, improved their overall record to 7-22. DWU, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, fell to 7-23 overall record.
The Trojans and Tigers battled through the opening set with 12 ties. At 19-16, DSU went on a 5-1 scoring spurt to extend their lead to 24-17. After DWU scored two straight points, the Trojans secured the first set by Brittney Anderson's kill (assisted by Stacey Schuller) to win the first set at 25-19 and gained a 1-0 match lead. The Trojans outhit DWU 18-10 in the first set. DSU hit .378 (18 kills with 4 errors in 37 attempts) compared to DWU .219 (10 kills with 3 errors in 32 attempts).
DSU scored the first two points of the second set, but the Tigers reeled off by scoring five straight points. From there, DWU never trailed as the Tigers even the match at 1-1 by recording a 25-18 victory. DWU hit .455 (14 kills with 4 errors in 22 attempts) in the second set compared to DSU's .120 (10 kills with 7 errors in 25 attempts).
Trailing 6-3 in the third set, the Trojans scored six straight points to earn a 9-6 lead. The Trojans continued their scoring run by extending their lead to 16-8 (15-5 scoring run). DSU won the third set by the score of 25-16 to regain a 2-1 match lead. The Trojans hit .205 (16 kills with 8 errors in 39 attempts), while DWU was held to .000 hitting percentage (6 kills with 6 errors in 35 attempts).
DSU and DWU went through 13 ties to kick off the fourth set. DWU held an 11-8 lead, but Dakota State went on a 13-3 scoring run to earn a 21-14 lead. The Tigers could get no closer than five points at four occasions as DSU sealed off their first home match victory this season (25-19 fourth set victory). DSU outhit DWU 17-8 in the fourth set. The Trojans hit .175 while DWU recorded their second straight set with a hitting percentage of .000.
Caitlin Pick smashed a match-high 17 kills and hit .483 for the Trojans. It was her seventh double digits kills in the last ten matches. Kelci Viesselman added 14 kills. Brittney Anderson recorded 12 kills. Haley Hillestad had eight kills.
Schuller and Kaylee Vander Wal each produced 24 set assists for DSU.
Katherine Gonzalez led the Trojans' defense with 16 digs. Schuller added 11 digs. Vander Wal and Chelsey Davis each had seven digs.
Pick, Schuller, Anderson and Gonzalez each had a service ace for Dakota State.
Katie Vetch had 12 kills for DWU. Hannah Hammer added seven kills. Taylor Spence and Elizabeth Humiston each had six kills.
Briana Jung had 33 assists and two service aces for the Tigers.
Spence and Maggie Stehly each had nine digs for Dakota Wesleyan. Vetch recorded four total blocks (a solo block and six block assists). Hammer had five block assists (2.5 total blocks).
Dakota State tied team season-highs of 61 kills and a .227 hitting percentage (61 kills with 29 errors in 141 attempts). DWU had 38 kills with 21 errors in 131 attempts for a hitting efficiency of .130.
Both teams had four service aces in the match.
The Trojans had 64 digs compared to DWU 42 digs. The Tigers recorded nine blocks (2 solo blocks and 14 block assists), while DSU had seven blocks (14 block assists).
Dakota State looks to extend their winning streak on Friday. The Trojans play in the Waldrof (Iowa) triangular. DSU will play Central Baptist (Ark.) at 5:30 p.m. and host-team Waldorf at 7:30 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Hansen Fieldhouse in Forest City, Iowa.
