MADISON, S.D. - The Dakota State University baseball team returned back to Dakota Athletic Conference (DAC) action Saturday. The Trojans played their first DAC home games versus Mayville State at the Flynn Field in cool, cloudy conditions. Mayville State scored in each inning in the first game to defeat the Trojans 16-5 in five innings. The Trojans fell short 7-6 in 10 innings in the nightcap.
Dakota State dropped their overall record to 2-22 and winless in six DAC conference games. Mayville State raised their record to 13-7 and 4-2 in the conference.
Game 1 - Mayville State 16, Dakota State 5 (5 innings)
Mayville State produced five runs in the opening inning. Jake McLain hit a 2-run home run in the top of the first inning to give Mayville State a 2-0 early lead. Brock Gnadt and James Olderbak each added an RBI single to extend their lead to 4-0. Billy Tomblin recorded an RBI double to give the Comets a 5-0 lead.
Max Garza and Jamie Barbour opened with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first inning for Dakota State. Chance Hargrove hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Cody Foreman (courtesy runner for Garza) to trim their deficit to 5-1.
The Comets added two runs in the top second frame to extend their lead to 7-1.
Garza hit a 3-run home run in the bottom of the second inning as DSU cut Comets' lead to 7-4.
In the top of the third inning, McLain hit his second home run of the game, a 3-run home run, to give Mayville State a 10-4 lead. Dan Bauer added an RBI double to make it 11-4 in a favor of the Comets.
Chaz Palmer hit an RBI single to score Ryan Steffensen to cut Mayville State's lead to 11-5 in the bottom of the third inning.
Mayville State added a run in the top of the fourth inning by Tomblin's RBI ground out to score Brad Ferraro. The Comets lead by the score of 12-5.
The Comets produced four runs in the top of the fifth frame to make it 16-5, highlighted by Ferraro's 2-run home run.
Mayville State ended the game in fifth inning due to mercy rule.
Garza went 2-for-3 with a home run and recorded three RBIs Dakota State. Barbour, Steffensen, Hargrove and Palmer each had a single.
Every starter each had at least one hit for the Comets. McLain was 3-for-4 with two home runs, a single and five RBIs. Ferraro added a home run, a double and three RBIs.
Mayville State out hit the Trojans 16-6.
Seth Doxey (1-4) suffered the loss for the Trojans. He tossed one inning and allowed seven runs on eight hits. Andy Lee pitched 2 1/3 inning and gave up five run on seven hits. Ted Wonnenberg worked the final 1 2/3 inning. He allowed four unearned run on one hit.
MaSU's Gnadt tossed a complete game for his first victory. He gave up five runs (three unearned) on six hits.
Game 2 - Mayville State 7, Dakota State 6 (10 innings)
Garza hit a single and Barbour hit a double to deep left field to open the bottom of the first inning for Dakota State. Foreman (courtesy runner for Garza) scored the first run of the game by Steffensen's RBI ground out. Hargrove added an RBI single to score Barbour to give DSU a 2-0 lead.
Dakota State hit back-to-back singles from Garza and Barbour to open the bottom of the third frame. Steffensen hit his second RBI ground out to score Foreman to extend DSU's lead to 3-0.
Tanner Carpenter hit an RBI single to score Louie Brezina (courtesy runner for Tomblin) for Comets' first run of the game in the top of the fourth inning. Alex Berry added an RBI single to score Dusty Brend to cut the Trojans' lead to 3-2. Mayville State tied the game at 3-3 as Carpenter advanced to home caused by DSU's defensive error after Berry stole for second base.
Mayville took the lead for the first time in the top of the sixth inning. Carpenter hit an RBI double to score Brezina to gain a 4-3 lead.
Ferraro and Ferrira hit back-to-back solo home runs to give Comets a 6-3 lead in the top of the seventh inning.
The Trojans answered with three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning. Hargrove hit a double to open the inning. Palmer and Kyle Braun hit back-to-back singles with one out to set up a bases loaded and one out situation for DSU. Pinch hitter Connor Hargrove recorded an RBI walk to score Chance Hargrove. Andy Lee was hit-by-pitch and scored Palmer to cut their deficit to 6-5. Garza added an RBI sacrifice fly to score Braun to tie the game at 6-6.
Both teams were unable to score in the ninth inning. Both went three-and-out.
In the top of the tenth inning with two outs, Berry recorded a walk. McLain hit an RBI double to score Berry to regain their lead to 7-6.
Dakota State was unable to score in the bottom of the tenth frame. The Trojans left two runners on base.
Garza, Barbour, Chance Hargrove and Palmer each had two hits for DSU. Steffensen recorded a single and two RBIs.
Carpenter had two doubles, a single, and two RBIs for the Comets. Berry, McLain and Ferrira each had two hits.
Both teams had 11 hits in the game. The Trojans committed four errors compared to the Comets' one.
Mayville State left 13 runners on base. DSU had 10 runners left on base.
Brandon Womack worked the first four innings of the game for Dakota State. He gave up three runs (one unearned) on six hits. Tom Bailey (1-6) took the loss as he tossed 5 2/3 innings. He allowed four runs on five hits. He struck out three batters. Beau Behrend pitched the final 1/3 inning for the Trojans.
Sheldon Jones started the game for the Comets. He tossed four innings and allowed three runs on six hits. Josh Drews came in for 3 1/3 innings. He gave up two runs on three hits. Ferrira pitched in the eighth inning and gave up one run on one hit. Bauer recorded his first win of the season as he tossed 2 2/3 innings where he limited the Trojans to one hit. He recorded five strikeouts.
Dakota State and Mayville State will conclude the four-game series on Sunday. The doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. at the Flynn Field.
