THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University (8-23 overall record) hosts in-state rival Sioux Falls (S.D.) (14-9) Tuesday night in DSU's final regular-season match. First serve is at DSU Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. On Saturday, the Trojans kick off the inaugural North Star Athletic Association Postseason Tournament at home versus Presentation (S.D.) (10-16). The quarterfinal match is slated for 7 p.m. at DSU Fiedlhouse in Madison, S.D
COSTUME NIGHT: Fans are encouraged to wear Halloween costume as part of the Costume night Tuesday night when the Trojans host Sioux Falls (S.D.), a member of NCAA Division II and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NSIC).
NSAA VOLLEYBALL POSTSEASON TOURNAMENT: Jamestown (N.D.) is the top seed for the inaugural North Star Athletic Association Volleyball Postseason Tournament. The single-elimination tournament kicks off on Saturday with a quarterfinal match between No. 5 seed Presentation (S.D.) and No. 4 seed Dakota State (S.D.) at 7 p.m. in Madison, S.D. The top-seeded Jamestown will host the quarterfinal winner on Wednesday, Nov. 6 in Jamestown, N.D. at 7 p.m. in the first semifinal action. The other semifinal action feature No. 3 seed Valley City State (N.D.) taking on No. 2 seed Mayville State (N.D.) in Mayville, N.D. at 7 p.m. The semifinal winners will play in the first-ever NSAA Volleyball Conference Postseason Tournament's championship match on Saturday, Nov. 9 at the highest remaining seed at 7 p.m.
LAST MEETING: Sioux Falls won the last meeting with Dakota State at the Stewart Center on Oct. 23, 2012. The Cougars won by the scores of 25-18, 25-19 and 27-25. The last time USF and DSU met at the DSU Fieldhouse was on Oct. 7, 2011 where the Trojans came on top in four sets. After dropping the first set 25-18, Dakota State went on to win the next three sets by the scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-23. Presentation and Dakota State split their two meetings this season with each winning on the road. The Trojans swept the Saints in three straight sets (25-17, 25-21 and 25-22) in Aberdeen, S.D. on Sept. 10. Presentation won the last meeting at Dakota State after falling the first two sets and rallied back to win in a five-set thriller (21-25, 15-25, 25-15, 25-23 and 15-13).
PICK SELECTED AS NSAA HITTER-OF-THE-WEEK: Caitlin Pick was selected as the North Star Athletic Association Volleyball Hitter-of-the-Week, announced Monday. She smashed a total of 35 kills in three matches as the Trojans went 2-1 for the week., including a 3-1 victory over in-state rival Dakota Wesleyan on Oct. 23 and 3-0 victory versus Central Baptist (Ark.) in the Waldorf (Iowa) triangular on Oct. 25. She averaged 3.9 kills per set and recorded a .415 hitting percentage for the week. Pick added seven blocks (3.5 total blocks) and a service ace for the Trojans.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State extended their winning streak to two– and three-straight matches last week before falling to Waldorf (Iowa). The Trojans defeated rival Dakota Wesleyan in four sets on Oct 23 where three DSU players recorded double digits kills. DSU dominated the Mustangs of Central Baptist (Ark.) in three straight sets in the first match of the Waldorf triangular on Oct. 25. The Trojans fell short in three sets to the host-team Warriors. Sioux Falls split a pair of NSIC conference matches at the Stewart Center, losing to Minnesota-Crookston in three sets on Oct. 25. The Cougars bounced back with a 3-0 victory over Bemidji State (Minn.). Presentation went 2-1 for the week, losing to NSAA"s top team Jamestown in three straight sets. The Saints concluded their home schedule with two straight three-set sweeps over Trinity Bible (N.D.) and Oak Hills.
GONZALEZ LEADS NSAA DIGS: Katherine Gonzalez leads the North Star Athletic Conference (NSAA) in the digs per set category. She averages 4.8 digs per set (480 total digs) this season for the Trojans. Gonzalez ranks 44th in the nation in total digs (480).
TEAM LEADERS: Caitlin Pick leads the Trojans' offense attack with 281 kills. She averages 2.7 kills per set for the Trojans. Pick leads with 0.5 blocks per set (57 total blocks). Katherine Gonzalez records 22 service aces (0.2 service ace per set) and 480 digs (4.8 digs per set) for DSU. Stacey Schuller leads the Trojans with 579 set assists (5.4 assists per set).
FRESHMEN TRIO BLOCKS: Three Dakota State's freshmen accumulated a total of 118 blocks this season, which is 75.6 percent of the team's total blocks (156). Haley Hillestad records 49 blocks while her teammates Tessa Weeldreyer have 38 blocks and Brittney Anderson records 31 blocks this season. Another freshman—Taylor Stratton—also records 18 blocks this fall.
100-KILL CLUB: Five Trojan volleyball players had surpassed 100 kills this season. Pick had 281 kills and averages 2.7 kills per set. Kelci Viesselman records 172 kills. Brittney Anderson have 157 kills in 92 sets played this season. Kylie Martin records 125 kills. Tessa Weeldreyer records 102 kills.
RECORDS WATCH: Stacey Schuller accumulated a total of 3,019 set assists during her career at Dakota State. She is currently second in the DSU volleyball record book for the most career assists. Jill Weisser currently holds the DSU school record with 3,150 assists. Schuller is 132 assists shy of breaking the Trojan volleyball record book for most career set assists.
TROJANS VS. SOUTH DAKOTA TEAMS: Dakota State is 3-3 against teams from South Dakota this season. The Trojans recorded a season series sweep over Dakota Wesleyan, recording pair of 3-1 victories at the Corn Palace on Aug. 31 and at the DSU Fieldhouse on Oct. 23. DSU also recorded a victory over Presentation in both teams' first-ever NSAA conference match in Aberdeen on Sept. 10. The Trojans dropped twice to Mount Marty and Presentation.
COACHES' CORNER: Amy Veenhof enters her fifth season as head coach at Dakota State. She has coached three all-conference players and seven NAIA Academic All-American scholar athletes. Her teams had been named to NAIA Scholar Team three times. Megan Kusler is in her second season as an assistant coach. Tom Mettler enters his first year as a student assistant coach.
