GAME NOTES (PDF)

THIS WEEK:  Dakota State (S.D.) (2-7 overall record, 2-1 North Star Athletic Association conference record) plays their final NSAA conference game Saturday afternoon at Jerome Berg Field in Mayville, N.D.  The Trojans are vying for a share of the first-ever NSAA conference football title as they battle Mayville State (5-3, 1-1 NSAA).  Kick-off is set for 3 p.m.

TROJANS SEEKING FIRST CONFERENCE TITLE SINCE 1978:  Dakota State is currently in a three-way tie for first-place in the North Star Athletic Association Football standings with Valley City State (N.D.) and Jamestown (N.D.).  All three teams have a 2-1 NSAA conference record.  The last time Dakota State captured a conference football regular-season title was 1978.  The Trojans won five South Dakota Intercollegiate Conference (SDIC) during the 1970's decade.  DSU won the SDIC football conference titles in 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977 and 1978. 

THE SERIES:  Mayville State owns a 12-11 series record over the Trojans after recording 34-33 victory on Nov. 3, 2012 at the Trojan Field.  The Trojans trailed 34-7 heading in the final quarter and roared back by scoring 26 straight points to trim MaSU's lead to 34-33 with 12 seconds remaining.  DSU fell short as the PAT kick was no good.  The Comets had won the last three meetings with the Trojans.  Mayville State defeated DSU 6-0 in the last meeting in Mayville on Nov. 5, 2011.  Dakota State had won 11 straight meetings in the series from 2001 to 2009.  The series began in 1986 where the Comets had won the first nine meetings over DSU.

ABOUT MAYVILLE STATE (N.D.):  Derek Schlieve is in his third season as Mayville State football head coach.  The Comets are currently 5-3 overall record and 1-1 NSAA conference record.  MaSU recorded victories over Haskell (Kan.) 13-6, Macalester (Minn.) 26-18, Valley City State (N.D.) 14-9, Trinity Bible (N.D.) 35-0 and Presentation (S.D.) 42-33.  The Comets are undefeated in the month of October and are on a four-game winning streak.  Mayville State is 3-1 at home, 2-1 on the road and 0-1 on neutral site. 

HUBBARD ON FRED MITCHELL AWARD LIST:  The Fred Mitchell Award recognizes 35 place-kickers for their excellence on the football field and in the community during the month of October.  Dakota State's Tanner Hubbard was one of the 35 place-kickers from all levels to be named on the list, announced on Tuesday.  For the month of October, Hubbard converted two field goals in two attempts including a season-long 38-yard field goal.  He was 11-for-13 on PAT kicks and scored 17 points during the month.  Hubbard scored seven points in 31-28 NSAA conference victory at Jamestown (N.D.) on Oct. 12.

TROJANS ADD RECORDS:  Dakota State had tied school records in the last game at South Dakota Mines on Oct. 26.  Cole Whisenhunt tied the DSU school record for 31 completed passes (Brandon Large and Daryl Fletcher).  DSu set a new school record for most team completions in a single game with 32 pass completions.  The previous old team record was 31 pass completions, which happned four times (last time at Concordia, Neb. on Oct. 1, 2011).  The Trojans recorded 30 first-downs in the game, tying the DSU school record for second most first-downs in a single game. 

LONGEST PUNT THIS SEASON:  Josh Licht recorded the longest punt of the season on Oct. 26 at South Dakota Mines in Rapid City, S.D.  He recorded a punt of 79 yards.  During the game, Licht had four punts for an average of 52.0 yards, setting a new DSU school record.  The previous old DSU school record in a single game for punt average was set in 1978 by Mark Hurd (48.4 average yards).

LAST TIME OUT:  South Dakota Mines raced to a 45-0 halftime lead and defeated the Trojans 69-25 in Rapid City, S.D. on Oct. 26.  The Trojans outscored the Hardrockers 19-17 in the third quarter.  The game accumulated a total of 1,133 yards—a season-high 509 offensive yards for Dakota State.  Mayville State rallied back in the fourth quarter for their first NSAA conference victory at Presentation (S.D.).  The Comets trailed 27-21 heading in the fourth quarter and outscored the Saints 21-6 to earn a come-from-behind victory. 

DSU TEAM LEADERS:  Cole Whisenhunt leads the Trojans in two different categories.  He averages 148.1 passing yards and 48.8 rushing yards.  Whisenhunt accumulates a total of 1,772 offensive yards, which is 20th-best in the nation.  Zach Ely and Bobby Tisch each have 38 receptions this season (29th in the nation).  Ely is 12th in the nation in total receiving yards with 727 yards.  Ben Kullos leads the Trojans with 81 tackles (9.0 tackles per game).  Josh Licht records four quarterback sacks, which tied his career-high (4 quarterback sacks in 2012).   He is 49th in the nation in total quarterback sacks.  Perry King is third in the nation with 664 kick-off return yards for the Trojans.

TROJANS NATIONAL RANKS:  Dakota State is 27th in the nation in opponents' fourth-down conversions (39.1 percent) and 37th in opponents' 3rd down conversions (36.2 percent).  The Trojans is 33rd in the nation in pass efficiency of 123.3 and 44th in total pass offense (1,472).  DSU's defense allowed 198.8 passing yards per game, which is 38th-best in the nation.  The Trojans are 48th in the nation in total scoring with 190 points.

FOOTBALL FORECAST:  As of Thursday from weather.com, the weather forecast in Mayville, N.D., calls for partly cloudy skies.  The forecast temperature is 48 degrees with the wind coming from the west at 5-15 miles-per-hour. 

DSU FOOTBALL HISTORY LESSON:  Dakota State is in its 94th year of competition.  The Trojans own an all-time record of 270-461-17.  DSU opened their first year of competition in 1908 with an overall record of 4-1-1.  Dakota State is in their first year membership with the newly-formed NAIA's conference—the North Star Athletic Association conference.
