MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University volleyball team stormed to a 2-0 lead (25-12 and 25-15) over Presentation (S.D.) Saturday evening in the quarterfinal match of the inaugural North Star Athletic Association Volleyball Conference Postseason Tournament at DSU Fieldhouse. The Trojans held on to a 25-23 third set victory for a 3-0 sweep over Saints, and move on to the semifinals.
Dakota State improved their overall record to 9-24. Presentation, played in their first full-year with the National Athletic Association (NAIA), finished their season with an overall record of 12-18.
The Trojans raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening set, thanks to kills from four DSU players (Brittney Anderson twice, Taylor Stratton, Caitlin Pick and Michele Rogers). Dakota State continued to grow their lead to 16-4. At 21-12, Dakota State closed the first set by scoring four straight points (25-12) to gain a 1-0 match lead.
DSU hit an impressive .326 in the first set (17 kills with 3 errors in 43 attempts). The Saints were held to negative .053 (4 kills with 6 errors in 38 attempts).
Presentation opened the second set with an 11-7 lead. From there, the Trojans outscored PC 13-1 to regain their lead at 20-12. Dakota State never looked back as the Trojans extended their match lead to 2-0 by recording a 25-15 second set victory.
DSU recorded a stellar .423 hitting percentage (13 kills with 2 errors in 26 attempts) in the second set. Presentation was held to a negative hitting percentage for the second straight set, recording a -.033 hitting efficiency (8 kills with 9 errors in 30 attempts).
The Trojans and Saints battled through the third set by recording 27 ties and eight lead changes. Tied at 23-23, Dakota State scored the final two points by a kill from Rogers and Anderson to seal the match (25-23). The Trojans had 14 kills (.136 hitting percentage) while the Saints recorded 13 kills (.200 hitting percentage).
Pick smashed 14 kills and hit .464 for the Trojans. Anderson added 13 kills and recorded a .455 hitting percentage. Tessa Weeldreyer had five kills. Stratton and Rogers each had four kills.
Katherine Gonzalez led the Trojans' defense with 10 digs. She had three service aces. Chelsey Davis and Anderson each had eight digs. Vander Wal had seven digs.
Rogers had a solo block and four block assists (3.0 total blocks) for Dakota State. Pick added three block assists (1.5 total blocks).
Megan Goedert led the Saints with eight kills. Katie Nelson added five kills.
Carly Peterson recorded 12 assists for PC. Mo Bunney added 10 assists.
Bunney had 16 digs for the Saints. Alyssa Jung added 12 digs.
Dakota State hit .274 in the match compared to the Saints' .039. The Trojans had 44 kills with 13 errors in 113 attempts compared to Presentation 25 kills with 21 errors in 103 attempts.
DSU had five service aces with a serving percentage of .932. The Saints recorded three service aces and recorded a .904 service percentage.
The Trojans had six blocks in the match. PC had a team block.
Dakota State continues their postseason run on Wednesday evening. The Trojans travel to the top-seed in the NSAA Volleyball Conference Postseason Tournament – Jamestown (N.D.). First serve from the Hansen Center is set for 7 p.m. in Jamestown, N.D.
