THIS WEEK: Dakota State (9-24 overall record) continues their postseason run in the inaugural North Star Athletic Association Postseason Volleyball Conference Tournament this week. The Trojans visit Jamestown (N.D.) (24-8) in the NSAA semifinals action Wednesday evening. First serve from the Hansen Center is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday's semifinals winners advance to the first-ever NSAA Volleyball Postseason Conference Tournament's championship match on Saturday at 7 p.m.
TROJANS WIN FIRST-EVER NSAA POSTSEASON MATCH: Dakota State won their first-ever North Star Athletic Association Volleyball postseason match on Nov. 2 with a 3-0 sweep over Presentation (S.D.). The Trojans stormed to a 2-0 lead (25-12 and 25-15) and held on to win the match by winning the third set by the score of 25-23. Dakota State hit impressive .326 hitting percentage in the first set and .423 in second set, while PC was held to negative hitting percentage in each set. Dakota State outhit Presentation 44-25 and .274-.039 in the match.
NSAA POSTSEASON CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT SEMIFINALS SET: The semifinals for the inaugural North Star Athletic Association Volleyball Postseason Tournament has been set for Wednesday night. Jamestown (N.D.), top-seed in the tournament, hosts No. 4 seed Dakota State (S.D.) at the Hansen Center in Jamestown, N.D. No. 2 seed Mayville State (N.D.) will welcome the third-seeded Valley City State (N.D.) at Lewy Lee Fieldhouse in Mayville, N.D. The winners of the semifinal matches will advance to the first-ever NSAA Volleyball Postseason Tournament's championship match on Saturday. The site will be held at the highest remaining seed. All matches are scheduled for 7 p.m.
GONZALEZ EARNS NSAA LIBERO-OF-THE-WEEK FOR THE SECOND TIME: The North Star Athletic Association has selected Dakota State's Katherine Gonzalez as its Libero Player-of-the-Week honor. It was her second time this season that she had received this weekly honor from NSAA. Gonzalez led the Trojans' defense with a total of 20 digs in two matches played last week. She recorded 10 digs versus the University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) on Oct. 29. Gonzalez added 10 digs and three service aces in 3-0 home victory over Presentation (S.D.) on Nov. 2. For the week, she produced a perfect reception percentage rate (100 percent) in 31 attempts. Gonzalez recorded a service percentage of .952 and averaged 3.3 digs per set last week. She leads the team with 500 digs this season for the Trojans.
LAST MEETING: Jamestown won both meetings with the Trojans this season. The Jimmies won the first meeting in Madison, S.D. on Sept. 21 by the scores of 25-14, 25-19 and 25-17. UJ defeated DSU in the second meeting on Oct. 12 in Jamestown, N.D. by the scores of 25-14, 25-15 and 25-20.
BACK IN WINNING COLUMN: Dakota State had won four matches in the last six matches. The Trojans snapped their nine-match losing skid with a 3-1 road victory at Saint Mary (Neb.) on Oct. 19. DSU notched another victory on Oct. 23 as they defeated long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) four sets. Dakota State swept in three straight sets versus Central Baptist (Ark.) on Oct. 25 in Forest City, Iowa before losing a pair of 3-0 defeats to Waldorf (Iowa) and University of Sioux Falls. The Trojans bounced back in the winning column with a 3-0 win over Presentation on Nov. 2 in Madison.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State went 1-1 for the week last week. The Trojans dropped a 3-0 home regular-season finale against in-state rival University of Sioux Falls (25-23, 25-11 and 25-15) on Oct. 29. The Trojans bounced back in the winning column on Nov. 2 with a three straight sets victory over Presentation (S.D.) in the inaugural North Star Athletic Volleyball Postseason Tournament. DSU won by the scores of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-23. Jamestown, which was off for two weeks, played their final regular-season match on Oct. 23 with a 3-0 NSAA conference victory. The Jimmies posted the scores of 25-18, 25-18 and 25-14 victory over Presentation.
TEAM LEADERS: Caitlin Pick leads the Trojans' offense attack with 297 kills. She averages 2.7 kills per set for the Trojans. Pick leads with 0.5 blocks per set (57 total blocks). Katherine Gonzalez records 25 service aces (0.2 service ace per set) and 500 digs (4.7 digs per set) for DSU. Stacey Schuller leads the Trojans with 599 set assists (5.3 assists per set).
RECORDS WATCH: Stacey Schuller is just 112 set assists away of setting a new DSU school record for most career assists. She currently records 3,039 assists through her three-year career at Dakota State. Jill Weisser holds the Trojan Volleyball record for most career assists with 3,150 assists. Schuller had produced 1,353 assists in her freshman season, 1,087 assists in her sophomore season and 599 assists this season for the Trojans.
COACHES' CORNER: Amy Veenhof enters her fifth season as head coach at Dakota State. She has coached three all-conference players and seven NAIA Academic All-American scholar athletes. Her teams had been named to NAIA Scholar Team three times. Megan Kusler is in her second season as an assistant coach. Tom Mettler enters his first year as a student assistant coach.
