THIS WEEK: The No. 18-ranked Dakota State men's basketball team (3-1 overall record) remains busy this week with three games scheduled. The Trojans head to the Corn Palace for a match-up with long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) (3-2) at 8 p.m. in Mitchell, S.D. on Wednesday evening. On Friday night, Dakota State plays an exhibition game with NCAA Division II and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference foe Northern State (S.D.) (2-1). Tip-off is set for 8 p.m. at Wachs Arena in Aberdeen, S.D. The Trojans return home on Saturday night as they host Trinity Bible (N.D.). The game is slated for 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison, S.D.
THREE STRAIGHT GAMES AT CORN PALACE: The Trojans will be making their third straight trip in six days to the Corn Palace on Wednesday night. DSU played a pair of game in the DWU/Fulton State Bank Classic on Nov. 8 and 9. Dakota State defeated Benedictine at Springfield (Ill.) 76-61 on the first day of the classic, but dropped an 85-73 contest to No. 19 Bellevue (Neb.) on the second day.
FIRST 3-0 START UNDER COACH GARNER: Dakota State produced their first 3-0 start since head coach Gary Garner's arrival as Trojan men's basketball head coach. The Trojans defeated Mount Marty (N.D.), Northwestern (Iowa) and Benedictine at Springfield (Ill.) to start the 2013 season with a 3-0 start.
EARLY-SEASON NAIA 'TOP 25' BATTLES: The Trojans played two early-season battles of NAIA 'Top 25' teams last week. Dakota State, No. 18 in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason national poll, defeated No. 15 Northwestern (Iowa) 78-72 on Nov. 6—DSU's first victory over the Red Raiders since the 1990-91 season (span of 9 games). The Trojans dropped an 85-73 contest to No. 19 Bellevue (Neb.) on Nov. 9 in the DWU/Fulton State Bank Classic. DSU is currently 1-1 versus teams that are ranked in the NAIA's 'Top 25' this season.
TROJANS CONTINUE HOME COOKING: Dakota State had won 14 of the last 16 home games at the DSU Fieldhouse, dating back to Feb. 25, 2012 when DSU defeated Valley City State (N.D.) in the semifinals of the Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Tournament. Dakota State was 10-2 at home last season and defeated Mount Marty (S.D.) 71-53 on Oct. 30 and Northwestern (Iowa) 78-72 on Nov. 6.
LAST TIME OUT: The Trojans went 2-1 for the week, including victories over nationally-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) 78-72 on Nov. 6 and Benedictine at Springfield (Ill.) 76-61 on Nov. 8. DSU lost to No. 19 Bellevue (Neb.) 85-73 on Nov. 9. DWU was busy with five home games in seven days span and went 3-2. The Tigers defeated Trinity Bible (N.D.) 92-68, Presentation (S.D.) 69-36 and Johnson & Wales (Colo.) 92-65. DWU lost a pair of games in their home classic—86-57 to No. 19 Bellevue (Neb.) and 66-58 to Benedictine at Springfield (Ill.). Northern State rallied back in the second-half and defeated Jamestown (N.D.) 78-73 on Nov. 12. Trinity Bible is scheduled to play Lakes Region State College (N.D.) Tuesday night.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State had won the last three meetings with Dakota Wesleyan, including a season series sweep last season. The Trojans recorded a 73-58 victory at the Corn Palace on Jan. 16, 2013 and 68-64 home victory at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 10, 2012. Northern State defeated DSU 95-62 in last year's exhibition game for the Trojans on Nov. 16, 2012. Dakota State swept Trinity Bible last season with a 90-69 home victory at DSU Fieldhouse on Jan. 26, 2013 and 80-59 road victory in Ellendale, N.D. on Nov. 15, 2012.
TEAM LEADERS: Yusuf Vinson leads the Trojans in three different categories. He averages 12.5 points, 9.3 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game for Dakota State. He is 25th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (3.5), 34th in total rebounds per game (9.3) and 43rd in total blocks (4). Adam Hofer records 15 assists (3.8 assists per game). He ranks 45th in the nation in total steals (9) and 49th in total steals per game (2.3).
DSU IN THE RANKS: According to the NAIA-DakStats statistical website as of Tuesday, Dakota State is 18th in the nation in field goal percentage defense (38.6 percent). The Trojans are 22nd in the nation in scoring defense per game (67.8), 24th in total blocks (14) and 27th in 3-point field goal percentage defense (28.1 percent). DSU is 31st in the nation in total assists (63) and total rebounds per game (41.8). The Trojans records 34 steals this season, which is 34th-beset in the nation.
