MADISON, S.D. – The Dakota State University cross country teams returned home Saturday morning to host the annual Herb Blakely Invitational at the Madison Country Club. Mount Marty (S.D.) won the women's team title, while Northwestern (Iowa) men captured the team title.
The meet started with the women's 5K race, which featured 62 runners. The Lancers had four runners in the top 5 to earn the team title with 25 points. Northwestern (Iowa) placed second with 46 points. Iowa Western was third with 76 points, followed by Wayne State (Neb.) fourth (111 points), Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) fifth (149 points, Iowa Lakes sixth (163 points) and Briar Cliff (Iowa) seventh (171 points).
Katie Smelker of Mount Marty won the individual title with a time of 18 minutes and 38.39 seconds.
Rain started to fall when the men's 8K race began. Mike Hoffman – who took a medical redshirt last season – gained the race's lead for the Trojans, but fell short when he was running to the finish line.
Three Northwestern (Iowa) runners claimed the top three spots to earn the team title with 22 points. Skyler Giddings recorded a time of 26:34.11 to capture the individual title.
A total of 74 runners completed the men's race. Iowa Western finished second with 45 points. Wayne State scored 92 points to earn third place finish. Mount Marty was fourth (96 points), followed by Briar Cliff fifth (135 points) and Iowa Lakes sixth with 181 points.
Dakota State will take a week off before returning back to action. The Trojans head to St. Paul, Minn. on Sept. 28 to compete in the annual Roy Griak Invitational that features numerous schools in the Midwest region. The women's race is slated to start at 9:30 a.m. with the men's race scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
