THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University men's basketball team (4-2 overall record), ranked No. 18 in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason Poll, visits No. 15 Northwestern (Iowa) (3-4) Wednesday evening at Bultman Center. The second meeting of the season between DSU and NWIA tips off at 7:30 p.m. in Orange City, Iowa. The Trojans step aside of their regular-season play as they play a pair of exhibition games against NCAA Division II and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) foes. DSU visits Augustana (S.D.) (0-2) on Saturday night. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Elmen Center in Sioux Falls. On Monday night, the Trojans travel to the Taylor Center in Mankato, Minn. to take on Minnesota State-Mankato (4-1) at 7 p.m.
NSU TESTED BY DAKOTA STATE: Dakota State played their first exhibition game of the season on Nov. 15 at Northern State (S.D.) in Aberdeen. Trailing as many as 19 points, the Trojans mounted a comeback late in the second-half for their first lead of the game over the Wolves. The Trojans fell short after holding a 90-88 lead with 1:35 remaining as NSU closed with a 5-0 scoring run. DSU could not convert their opportunities to tie or regain their lead as they missed two shots in the final 14 seconds of the game.
DSU VS. NAIA 'TOP 25' TEAMS: Wednesday's game will mark the third time that Dakota State had faced a team that is ranked in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball 'Top 25' national poll. In addition, the Trojans play Northwestern (Iowa) for the second battle of early-season NAIA 'Top 25' teams. DSU played No. 19 Bellevue (Neb.) on Nov. 9 and dropped a 85-73 decision at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, S.D. The Trojans will play two more teams from the 'Top 25' by the end of this month in the Midland (Neb.) Classic. DSU face No. 9 Evangel (Mo.) from NAIA Division I school and host-team No. 8 Midland (Neb.) in the classic.
TROJANS VS. GPAC: Dakota State is currently 2-1 against members of the Great Plains Athletic Conference members this season. The Trojans defeated a pair of GPAC foes in DSU's first two home games of the season—71-53 versus Mount Marty (S.D.) on Oct. 30 and 78-72 versus No. 15 Northwestern (Iowa) on Nov. 6. DSU suffered a 85-76 defeat to long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) on Nov. 13 at Corn Palace. The Trojans will play two games against members of the GPAC this month—at Northwestern on Nov. 20 and at Midland (Neb.) on Nov. 30. Dakota State is slated to host a pair of GPAC members—Morningside (Iowa) and Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.)—in December.
LAST TIME OUT: DSU went 1-1 last week and lost an exhibition game to Northern State (S.D.) 93-90 on Nov. 15. The Trojans lost to long-time rival Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.) 85-76 on Nov. 13 at Corn Palace. Dakota State bounced back in the winning column, recording their 15th home victory in the last 17 home games at DSU Fieldhouse with a 90-48 rout over Trinity Bible (N.D.). Northwestern (Iowa) dropped a pair of GPAC road games, losing at Briar Cliff (Iowa) 91-77 on Nov. 12 and at Hastings (Neb.) 90-81 on Nov. 16. Augustana lost a pair of games in the Sanford Pentagon Basketball Showcase, losing to Missouri Western State 65-64 on Nov. 9 and Central Missouri 75-63 on Nov. 10. Minnesota State-Mankato stormed past a pair of NAIA Division II schools at home—94-50 versus Waldorf (Iowa) on Nov. 15 and 81-59 versus Jamestown (N.D.) on Nov. 17.
LAST MEETING: Dakota State shot 49.2 percent overall shooting from the field on Nov. 5 to defeat Northwestern (Iowa) 78-72 in early-season battle of NAIA 'Top 25' teams at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 6. Augustana won the last meeting with the Trojans on Nov. 19, 2012. The Vikings defeated DSU by the score of 66-47 in Trojans' exhibition game. Minnesota State-Mankato is 2-0 all time against the Trojans with the last meeting on Nov. 26, 1993. The Mavericks came on top of DSU by the score of 93-86 as part of the Tip-off Tournament hosted by MSU-M.
TEAM LEADERS: Yusuf Vinson leads the Trojans in three different categories. He averages 13.7 points, 9.5 rebounds and 0.7 blocks per game for Dakota State. He is 13th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (3.8), 19th in total rebounds per game (9.5) and 39th in free-throw percentage (87.5 percent). Adam Hofer records 19 assists (3.2 assists per game) and 10 steals (1.7 steals per game) for the Trojans
