MADISON, S.D. – Dakota State landed five selections to the inaugural North Star Athletic Association Football All-Conference first team, announced Wednesday. The Trojans also have five selections to the 2013 NSAA Football All-Conference Honorable Mention.
Zach Ely, Josh Licht, Ronnie Jorgenson, Zac Woods and Perry King were named to NSAA Football All-Conference First Team. Austin Ross, Bobby Tisch, Ben Kullos, Cole Whisenhunt and Chad John were selected to NSAA Football All-Conference Honorable Mention team.
Dakota State finished their first season in the North Star Athletic Association Football conference with a 2-2 record. The Trojans are tied for third place in the NSAA Football conference standings with Mayville State (N.D.), just one game behind co-leaders Valley City State (N.D.) and Jamestown (N.D.) with a 3-1 conference record.
Below is the list of each Trojan selection on the NSAA Football All-Conference teams:
Zach Ely – 1st Team – Junior – Wide Receiver – Colton, S.D.: Ely led the Trojans with 42 receptions for a total of 801 yards (26th in the nation) this season. He averaged 19.1 yards per catch. Ely averaged 80.1 yards receiving per game for DSU, which is 25th-best in the nation. He scored 66 points in 2013 with 11 touchdowns, ranking him 39th in the nation in total scoring for touchdowns. Ely was named to NSAA Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week on Sept. 23 after producing career-high of 179 receiving yards (35.8 yards per catch) and caught three touchdown passes. Zach is the son of Scott and Sara Ely. He is a junior Exercise Science major at Dakota State University.
Josh Licht – 1st Team – Senior – Defensive End – Estelline, S.D.: Licht tallied a total of four quarterback sacks (for loss of 24 yards) this season for the Trojans, tying his season-high in quarterback sacks (4 quarterback sacks in his junior season). For the season, he accumulated a total of 76 tackles – 16 solo tackles and 60 assist tackles. Licht recorded 13.5 tackles-for-loss (39th in the nation in total tackles-for-loss) of 52.2 yards. He also had a forced fumble, a fumble recovery return for 27 yards and a blocked kick. In addition, Licht had 19 punts for a total of 782 yards (41.2 average per punt). He set a new DSU school record for the longest punt of 79 yards at South Dakota Mines on Oct. 26. Josh is the son of Bill and Lisa Licht. He is a senior Physical Education major at Dakota State University.
Ronnie Jorgensen – 1st Team – Senior – Defensive Line – Balaton, Minn.: Jorgenson earned his second straight All-Conference selection for the Trojans (he was named to Association of Independent Institutions Football All-Conference in 2012). He accumulated a total of 49 tackles this season – 16 solo tackles and 33 assist tackles. Jorgenson had 13.5 tackles-for-loss (39th in the nation in total tackles-for-loss) of 46.2 yards. He recorded 2.5 quarterback sacks (for loss of 18 yards. He had two broken-up passes and recorded a forced fumble. Ronnie is the son of Randy Jorgenson and Annette Miller. He is a senior Elementary Education/Special Education major at Dakota State University.
Zac Woods – 1st Team – Junior – Offensive Line – Cherokee, Iowa: Woods started in every game for the Trojans as the center for the offensive line. He helped the Trojans accumulate a total of 3,037 offensive yards this season – 1,631 passing yards and 1,406 rushing yards. Dakota State produced 204 points this season (20.4 points per game) and 170 first-downs. Zac is the son of John and Quinn Woods. He is a junior Business Management at Dakota State University.
Perry King – 1st Team – Senior – Linebacker/Kickoff Returner – Valdosta, Ga.: King ranks eighth in the nation in total kick-off returns of 703 yards. He set a new DSU school record for most kick-off return yards, breaking the previous old mark of 669 yards set by Tard Smith in 1993. King averaged 18.0 yards per kickoff return. He recorded the second most kickoff return yards of 154 yards at Peru State (Neb.) on Aug. 31. Defensively, King had 61 tackles – 20 solo tackles and 41 assist tackles. He had 4.5 tackles-for-loss of 19.2 yards. He had a quarterback sack (for loss of 8 yards). King recorded a forced fumble and a blocked kick. Perry is the son of Perry King, Sr. and Beverly Pendleton. He is a senior Exercise Science major at Dakota State University.
Austin Ross – Honorable Mention – Sophomore – Cornerback – Chester, S.D.: 2013 Stats – 38 tackles (22 solo tackles and 16 assist tackles); 2.0 tackles-for-loss of 15.0 yards; 3 interceptions (ranked 49th in the nation in total interceptions); 5 broken-up passes; forced fumble. Austin is the son of Jeff and Beth Ross. He is a sophomore Business Management major at Dakota State University.
Bobby Tisch – Honorable Mention – Sophomore – Tight End – New Ulm, Minn.: 2013 Stats – 41 receptions for 396 receiving yards; 9.7 yards per catch; 2 touchdowns; 39.6 receiving yards per game; Bobby is the son of Donn and Margaret Tisch. He is a sophomore Business/Marketing major at Dakota State University.
Ben Kullos – Honorable Mention – Sophomore – Linebacker – Peoria, Ariz.: 2013 Stats – led the Trojans' defense with 93 tackles (25 solo tackles and 68 assist tackles); 9.0 tackles-for-loss of 18.8 yards; 1 interception; fumble recovery return for 31 yards; NSAA Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week on Sept. 23; ranks 29th in the nation in tackles per game (9.3 tackles per game); Ben is the son of Berney and Nancy Kullos. He is a sophomore Secondary Math Education major at Dakota State University.
Cole Whisenhunt – Honorable Mention – Senior – Quarterback – Chino Valley, Ariz.: 2013 Stats – completed 125 passes in 224 attempts (55.8 completion rate) for 1,492 passing yards (50th in the nation in total passing yards) with 13 touchdowns; 149.2 passing yards per game (50th in the nation in passing yards per game); 182 rushes for 475 yards with 6 touchdowns; 47.5 rushing yards per game; 1,967 total offensive yards (31st in the nation); Cole is the son of Bret and Maria Whisenhunt. He is a senior Exercise Science major at Dakota State University.
Chad John – Honorable Mention – Senior – Linebacker – Pleasant Grove, Utah: 2013 Stats – 76 tackles (17 solo tackles and 59 assist tackles); 10.5 tackles-for-loss of 27.3 yards; 2.5 quarterback sacks (for loss of 15.7 yards); recorded a broken-up pass and a forced fumble. Chad is the son of Kirk John and Tammy High. He is a senior Accounting major at Dakota State University.
