ORANGE CITY, Iowa – Dakota State met Northwestern (Iowa) for the second time this month Wednesday evening in the early season battle of NAIA Division II Men's Basketball 'Top 25' teams.  The Red Raiders held off the Trojans by the score of 69-66 to earn a season series split with DSU.

Dakota State, No. 18 in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason national poll, fell to 4-3 overall record.  NWIA, ranked No. 15, improved their overall record to 4-4.  The Trojans won the first meeting this season 78-72 on Nov. 6 at DSU Fieldhouse for their first win over the Red Raiders since 1990-91 season.

DSU and Northwestern went through three ties and nine lead changes in the first six minutes and nine seconds of the game.

At 17-16, the Red Raiders went on a 17-2 scoring run for the biggest lead of the game at 34-18 with 7:20 left in the first-half.

The Trojans answered back by closing the first-half with a 15-4 scoring spurt to cut NWIA's lead to 36-33 by intermission.

NWIA shot 41.2 percent from the field (14-for-34) in the first twenty minutes of the game compared to DSU 13-for-34 (38.2 percent).  Both teams made three 3-pointers.  The Red Raiders were 5-for-7 from the free-throw line (71.4 percent) while the Trojans made four free-throws in six attempts (66.7 percent).

Northwestern's lead grew to nine points on two occasions at 58-49 with 10:09 left and 66-57 with 5:31 left.

The Trojans were able to trim NWIA's lead to two points at 68-66 after Cameron Krump made both free-throw attempts with 1:53 left.

Tyler Goldston hit the first free-throw shot to give NWIA a 69-66 lead with five seconds left in the game, but missed the second free-throw.  DSU Cameron Robinson's 3-point shot was missed as time expired as NWIA held to victory.

Northwestern was held to no field goals in the final 5:31 of the game as the Trojans closed the game with a 9-3 run (all 3 points are by free throws by NWIA).

Both teams scored 33 points in the second-half.

NWIA shot 40.7 percent from the field (11-for-27) in the second-half compared to DSU 39.4 percent (13-for-33).  The Red Raiders were 9-for-16 from the free-throw line, while the Trojans were 4-for-7 at the free-throw line (57.1 percent).

Dylan Hale scored 14 points for the Trojans.  Robinson added 11 points and shot 3-for-5 from the 3-point arc.  Adam Hofer and Krump each had nine points.  Yusuf Vinson recorded eight points.

Vinson pulled down eight rebounds for DSU.  Krump added six rebounds.  Jordan Snyder and Hale each had five rebounds.

Robinson and Seth Cavanaugh each dished out two assists for DSU.  Hale stole the ball four times.

Hofer. Vinson and Miguel Sansavour each had a blocked shot.

Zack Leeper led the Red Raiders with 18 points.  Jordan Baker added 16 points.  Gerasimo Mantalvanos scored 10 points off the bench.

Bryce Moss earned eight rebounds for NWIA.  Baker, Leeper and Mantalvanos each had six rebounds.

Joey Habtemariam dished out six assists for Northwestern.  Leeper recorded five steals.

NWIA shot 41 percent overall from the field (25-for-61) compared to the Trojans' 38.8 percent (26-for-67).  DSU was 6-for-20 from the 3-point line (30 percent), while Northwestern was 5-for-15 from the 3-point arc (33.3 percent).

The Red Raiders went to the free throw line 23 times, making 14 free-throws (60.9 percent).  The Trojans were 8-for-13 from the free-throw line (61.5 percent).

DSU outrebounded Northwestern 45-41 in the game.

Dakota State steps outside of their regular-season play for a pair of exhibition games against members of NCAA Division II and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference, starting on Saturday night at Elmen Center.  The Trojans visit Augustana (S.D.) in Sioux Falls, S.D. at 7 p.m.
