THIS WEEK: The Dakota State University men's basketball team (4-5 overall record) play their final exhibition game of the season on Wednesday evening. The Trojans visit NCAA Division I South Dakota State (3-6) at Frost Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Brookings. On Saturday, DSU returns home for the first time since Nov. 16 as they welcome Morningside (Iowa) (4-4) of the Great Plains Athletic Conference. The game is slated to start at 7 p.m. at DSU Fieldhouse in Madison.
TROJANS IN EXHIBITION GAMES: Wednesday's game marks the fourth and final exhibition game for Dakota State this season. The Trojans played three exhibition games during the month of November against members of the NCAA Division II and Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC). DSU fell short to Northern State (S.D.) 93-90 on Nov. 15, Augustana (S.D.) 81-65 on Nov. 23 and No. 12 Minnesota State-Mankato 95-71 on Nov. 25.
CHALLENGING NOVEMBER SCHEDULE: Dakota State faced a total of six ranked teams in the month of November. The Trojans faced four teams that were ranked in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball Coaches' Preseason poll. In addition, DSU played a nationally-ranked team from NCAA Division II Minnesota State-Mankato, trailing by just two points at halftime (37-35) but were outscored by the Mavericks in the second-half. Last weekend, Dakota State faced a pair of NAIA 'Top 10' teams, losing to NAIA Division I No. 9 Evangel (Mo.) 80-77 on Nov. 29 and No. 8 Midand (Neb.) on Nov. 30.
HOME COOKING: The Trojans recorded their 15th home victory in the last 17 home games at DSU Fieldhouse after DSU routed Trinity Bible (N.D.) 90-48 on Nov. 16. Dakota State is 3-0 overall record at home this season, including victories over Mount Marty (S.D.) and No. 15 Northwestern (Iowa). During Gary Garner head coaching tenure at DSU, the Trojans had produced a home record of 40-18, a winning percentage of .690.
DSU LEADS NSAA REBOUNDS: Dakota State leads the North Star Athletic Association (NSAA) in rebounds per game with an average of 43.1 rebounds. According to the DakStats-NAIA statistical website as of Tuesday, the Trojans are 11th in the nation in total rebounds per game (43.1), 12th in offensive rebounds per game (14.7) and 22nd in defensive rebounds per game (28.4). DSU have a plus-5.1 total rebound margin, which is 42nd-best in the nation. Yusuf Vinson ranks 12th in the nation in offensive rebounds per game (3.7) and 26th in total rebounds per game with an average of 8.8 rebounds.
LAST TIME OUT: Dakota State dropped a pair of games against NAIA 'Top 10' teams in the Draemel Classic, hosted by Midland (Neb.) last weekend. The Trojans fell short in closing seconds to NAIA Division I No. 9 Evangel (Mo.) 80-77 on Nov. 29. DSU could not get back in the winning column as they suffered an 84-69 defeat to the host-team Midland, which the Warriors are ranked No. 8 in the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball national preseason poll.
LAST MEETING: The series began in 1903-04 where Dakota State, former known as Madison Normal, swept the season series with South Dakota State. The last time DSU defeated SDSU was during the 1933-34 season by the score of 35-34. In the last meeting on Dec. 6, 2012, DSU jumped to a 5-0 lead over South Dakota State at Frost Arena. Trailing 11-5, the Jackrabbits went on a 17-1 scoring run to overtake the lead from DSU at 20-12 with less than ten minutes in the first-half. SDSU would never look back and recorded an 83-52 victory over the Trojans. Morningside and DSU split their season series with each team winning on its own home court. The Trojans defeated the Mustangs 76-73 in overtime thriller at DSU Fieldhouse on Nov. 13, 2012. Morningside defeated Dakota State 65-53 on Dec. 29, 2012 as part of Morningside Holiday Classic.
TEAM LEADERS: Yusuf Vinson averages 14.1 points per game for the Trojans this season. He shoots 50 percent from the field. Vinson records 79 total rebounds this season and averages 8.8 rebounds per game. He records six blocked shots (0.7 blocked shots per game). Adam Hofer leads the team with 19 assists (2.7 assists per game). Dylan Hale records 16 steals, averaging 1.8 steals per game this season.
