THIS WEEK: Dakota State kicks off their 2013-14 indoor track and field season Saturday at the Minnesota State-Mankato Chuck Petersen Preseason Open. Two runners will also compete on Saturday in the Fremont Half-Marathon.
MSU-M CHUCK PETERSEN PRESEASON OPEN: The Trojans start their 2013-14 indoor track and field season in the annual Minnesota State-Mankato Chuck Petersen Preseason Open. The meet takes place at Myers Fieldhouse in Mankato, Minn. The first field event is slated for 11 a.m. with the weight throw and long jump. The running events kick off at 12 noon with the 60-meters high hurdles.
FREMONT HALF-MARATHON: Dakota State will be sending two runners – Taylor Hauge and Michael Hoffman – to the Fremont Half-Marathon on Saturday. The half-marathon meet, hosted by Midland (Neb.), gives the runners their chance to qualify for 2014 NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in the full marathon event. Runners will need to finish between one hour and 12 seconds and one hour and 14 seconds to qualify for the full marathon at 2014 NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships in Gulf Shores, Ala. on May 22-24.
2012-13 SEASON IN REVIEW: Dakota State took seven runners – Seth Boomsma, Andy Coy, Brooke Fritz, Kayla Sveen, Stephanie Uher, Stephanie Warnke and D'Artist Williams – to the 2013 NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Geneva, Ohio. Two Trojan men's runners captured runner-up honors at the national meet. Boomsma placed second in the men's 60-meter dash finals with a time of 6.75 seconds. Coy was second in the men's 1000-meter run with a time of 2:28.00. Both Boomsma and Coy earned NAIA Indoor Track & Field All-American honors. As the result, the Trojan men's indoor track and field team placed 17th as a team at the national meet with 16 points. The DSU women's 4 x 800-meter relay – Sveen, Warnke, Fritz and Uher – finished 21st with a time of 9:43.79 (they improved their previous qualifying time of 9:51.34).
ROSTER BREAKDOWN: The Trojans have 39 athletes listed on their roster this season. Dakota State has five seniors on the team – Kris Dearie, Ryan Gimbel, Michael Hoffman, David Sotir and Trevor Tilburg. DSU have 6 juniors, 13 sophomores and 15 freshmen on the team.
2013-14 SCHEDULE: Dakota State is scheduled to compete in nine different regular-season indoor track and field meets in 2013-14. The full regular-season gets in action on Jan. 18, 2014 as the Trojans compete in the Dordt (Iowa) Invitational in Sioux Center, Iowa. DSU will make stops at Wayne State (Neb.) on Jan. 25 and MSU-Mankato on Jan. 31-Feb. 1. Dakota State is scheduled to take the majority of the team to the University of South Dakota Open on Feb. 8. In addition on Feb. 8, partial members of the Trojan indoor track and field teams will participate in the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational, hosted by the University of Nebraska. The final regular-season meet is slated for Feb. 22 as DSU compete in the Buena Vista Relays in Storm Lake, Iowa. If the athletes produced national qualifying times or marks during the regular-season meet, they will qualify for the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships in Geneva, Ohio on March 6-8.
COACHES' CORNER: Dakota State University track and field head coach Buzz Stevenson has been involved in sports since his high school days in Ipswich, S.D. and has been a coach and teacher for more than 45 years. While at DSU, Stevenson has garnered 14 South Dakota-Iowa Conference Coach of the Year titles and two NAIA Great Plains regional cross-country coach of the year awards. He has accumulated 14 SDIC championships and his athletes have produced 57 All-American honors. Anthony Drealan is in his third year as an assistant coach in track and field. Alex Glover enters his first season with the DSU track & field program as the throwing coach. Cody Foreman is also an assistant track and field coach for the Trojans.
