HASTINGS, Neb. - The Dakota State University baseball team traveled to the Duncan Field for a four-game series with Hastings College on Saturday and Sunday. The Broncos swept the Trojans by the scores of 4-3, 3-1, 9-1 and 3-0.
Dakota State remained winless in 14 games. Hastings, a member of the Great Plains Athletic Conference, won five straight games and improved their overall record to 9-9.
Game 1 - Hastings 4, Dakota State 3 - Box Score
After two scoreless innings, the Trojans recorded the first runs of the game in the top of the third inning. Beau Behrend hit a single and recorded a stolen base with one out. Chaz Palmer hit a single and advanced Behrend to third base. Ryan Steffensen hit an RBI single to score Behrend for DSU's first run. The Trojans added another run by Chance Hargrove's RBI single to score Palmer to take a 2-0 lead.
Hastings overtook the lead in the bottom fourth frame. The Broncos recorded three runs to grab a 3-2 lead.
Dakota State answered back with a run scored to tie the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Chance Hargrove hit his second RBI single of the game to score Steffensen.
Sonny Hughey opened the bottom of the seventh inning with a single and advanced to second base caused by DSU's defensive error. With one out, Geoff Hobbs hit a game-winning RBI double to score Hughey to secure the victory.
Chance Hargrove went 2-for-3 behind the plate with two RBIs for the Trojans. Steffensen recorded three singles, a run scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. Palmer, Seth Doxey, Max Garza and Behrend each had a single.
For Hastings, Hughey was perfect behind the plate, going 3-for-3 with a run scored. John LaMaster and Hobbs each had a double. AJ Clark, Colton Williams, Adam Brown and Daniel Nealon each had a single. Brown swiped two bases.
The Broncos left eight runners on base compared to the Trojans' five.
Tom Bailey started the game for Dakota State. He tossed 3 1/3 innings and allowed one run on four hits. Ted Wonnenberg and Brandon Womack pitched a combined 1/3 innings of relief. Connor Hargrove suffered the loss for DSU. He pitched the last 2 2/3 innings of the game and allowed unearned run on two hits.
Kirby Wells pitched six innings for Hastings. He gave up three runs on six hits. Mack Land recorded his second victory of the season as he pitched a shutout seventh inning.
Game 2 - Hastings 3, Dakota State 1 - Box Score
Behrend opened the top of the third inning with a double for the Trojans. Palmer hit a ground out to shortstop to advance Behrend to third base. Steffensen hit an RBI ground out to score Behrend for the first run of the game as DSU grab a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Hobbs opened with a double. John Rivera hit a single and advanced Connor Thomas (courtesy runner for Hobbs) to third base. A passed ball by DSU scored Thomas to tie the game at 1-1 and advanced Ryan Gardner (pinch runner for Rivera) to second base. Land recorded an RBI single to score Gardner to take a 2-1 lead. With bases loaded and two outs situation, the Broncos added an RBI walk by Mike Tomlin and scored Land to extend their lead to 3-1.
The Trojans were unable to score in the final inning.
Behrend went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored for DSU. He recorded two stolen bases. Garza and Chance Hargrove each added a single.
Hobbs was 1-for-3 behind the plate with a double for the Broncos. Rivera, Land, Eric Steitz, Gab Salas and Zach Nelson each had a single.
Hastings had nine runners left on base. The Trojans had three runners left on base.
Palmer started the game for the Trojans. He tossed four shutout innings and allowed one hit. Dylan Jones pitched one inning in relief. He gave up one run on two hits. Doxey took the loss for DSU as he pitched in the sixth inning. He allowed two runs (one unearned) on three hits. He struck out two batters.
Adam Poulsen pitched a complete game and recorded his first pitching win for Hastings. He allowed one run on three hits. Poulsen struck out five batters.
Game 3 - Hastings 9, Dakota State 1 - Box Score
Tomlin opened the bottom of the first inning with a triple for Hastings. He scored the first run of the game with two outs caused by Trojans' defensive error to take an early 1-0 lead.
Cody Falk hit a triple to open the bottom of the third frame. Clark hit an RBI sacrifice fly to score Falk to extend their lead to 2-0.
The Broncos scored a combined seven runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings to expand their lead to 9-0.
Dakota State broke their scoring drought in the top of the seventh inning. Kyle Braun scored caused by Broncos' defensive error.
Chance Hargrove, Max Garza and Braun each had a single for DSU.
Tomlin, Rivera and Falk each had a triple for the Broncos. Clark and Rivera each recorded two RBIs. Clark, Hobbs, Steitz and Nealon each had a single.
Dakota State had seven runners left on base compared to Hastings' five.
Jamie Barbour suffered the loss for the Trojans. He tossed four innings and allowed eight runs (five unearned) on five hits. Wonnenberg pitched the final two innings in relief. He gave up one run on three hits.
Williams improved his pitching record to 2-1 as he recorded the win. He worked for the first five innings and allowed two hits. Williams recorded nine strikeouts. Addison Ives tossed a shutout sixth inning in relief. Elliot Haas pitched the final inning and allowed an unearned run.
Game 4 - Hastings 3, Dakota State 0 - Box Score
After a scoreless first inning, the Broncos scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning. Rivera hit a single with one out. Thomas hit an RBI triple to score Rivera for a 1-0 lead.
Clark recorded an RBI single to score Hughey in the bottom of the third frame to make it 2-0 in favor of the Broncos.
Hastings added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning to extend their lead to 3-0.
The Broncos limited Dakota State to one hit in the game. Chance Hargrove recorded a single in the top of the sixth inning.
Rivera went 2-for-3 with a run scored for the Broncos. Thomas added a triple, a single and recorded an RBI. Hughey and Clark each added a single.
Doxey recorded the loss for DSU as he pitched a complete game. He allowed three runs on six hits. Doxey struck out four batters.
Clark notched the pitching victory for the Broncos. He tossed a complete game and allowed one hit. Clark recorded nine strikeouts.
Dakota State will return home on Friday. The Trojans will attempt to record their first win of the season as they host University of Minnesota-Morris in the first game of the three-game series (each game will be a nine-inning game). First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at the Flynn Field.
