MANAKTO, Minn. – Four Dakota State University track and field athletes set personal best Saturday in the Minnesota State-Mankato Chuck Petersen Preseason Open, competing with schools from NCAA Division II at Myers Fieldhouse. Kayla Sveen claimed an individual title in their Trojan indoor track and field season opener.
The Trojans dominated the middle distance in the meet. Mark Moeller set his personal best time of one minute and 23.87 seconds – just one second shy for producing a national qualifying time – to earn fourth-place finish. Jared Truman was sixth in 1:29.81 and Brandon Knutson was eighth in 1:32.98. Victoria Sopko finished 11th on the women's side with a time of 1:48.84.
Michael Hoffman clocked a time of 8:52.53 to set his personal best time in the men's 3000-meter run. He was sixth in the event, just seven seconds short for recording the national qualifying time. Anastasia Gentles was 10th on the women's side in 12:54.61.
In men's throws, Ryan Gimbel recorded his personal best of 45 feet and 11.25 inches to finish fourth in shot put.
Gimbel was fourth in the men's weight throw with a measurement of 49 feet and 7.25 inches. Trevor Van Tilburg threw a measurement of 45 feet and 11.75 for a fifth-place finish, producing his personal best mark.
D'Artist Williams, who ran as an unattached runner in the meet, clocked a time of 7.05 seconds in the men's 60-meter dash and advanced to the finals. Spencer Carlson was 18th (7.26 seconds – 7.254), Marty Hargrove 19th (7.26 seconds – 7.255) and Trevor Jacobsen 24th (7.41 seconds). In the women's 60-meter dash, Sara Friesen was 30th in 8.72 seconds.
Williams was sixth in the men's 60-meter dash finals with a time of 7.08 seconds.
In the men's 400-meter dash, Mitchell Trestrail was ninth (54.68 seconds).
Heather Dearing leaped a measurement of 4 feet and 11 inches for a ninth-place finish in the women's high jump. Elizabeth Atkins was 15th (4 feet, 7 inches).
David Sotir placed 12th in the men's 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.23 seconds.
Four Trojan runners competed in the men's 200-meter dash. Jacobsen was 11th with a time of 23.57 seconds. Carlson placed 15th in 23.99 seconds, followed by Sotir with a 17th-place finish (24.28 seconds). Hargrove finished 19th in 24.32 seconds.
Ashley Currey threw a measurement of 40 feet and 7.5 inches to earn 15th-place finish in the women's weight throw. Shayna Dwyer was 18th with a measurement of 37 feet and 11.5 inches.
Dwyer produced a throw measurement of 33 feet and 10.25 inches to place 12th in the women's shot put. Clara Schild was 14th (32 feet, 11.75 inches). Currey finished 16th with a measurement of 32 feet and 4.75 inches. Kelci Viesselman placed 17th (31 feet and 6.75 inches).
The DSU men's 4 x 400-meter relay – Trestrail, Truman, Selchert and Moeller – recorded a time of 3:35.36 to place fifth.
Dakota State returns back to action after Christmas break on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2014. The Trojans compete in the Dordt (Iowa) Invitational in Sioux Center, Iowa.
